diately recognized his brethren boon their arrival in Egypt, but they did net recognize him. In this test Joseph 1. Accused them of being spies (42:9-17). He declared that they had come to see the nakedness of (lie land. In spite of their protests of iniiocency, he cast them Into prison and demanded that their younger brother be brought us a proof of the truth-
fulness of their word.
2. He kept Simeon as a hostage
(42:18-38). Joseph declared that because he feared God he sent the rest home with provisions for their families, demanding that Benjamin be | brought to him. To further impress ' them with his wisdom and power, JoI seph ordered the money of every one I to be restored In his sack. Upon the j discovery of the money they exclnimed,
I “What hath God done to us?” ,3. Benjamin’* peril (44:2-1.3). By
a clever device Joseph’s cup was placed j in Benjamin's sack and was used as I an occasion for bringing them hack | on tiie charge of theft. Convicted . now of their sins and realizing tiie ! seriousness of their situation, Judah I pleaded for the release of Benjamin. Benjamin was now being held as tiie
one supposedly guilty of theft, II. Judah’s Pleas (44:18 34).
I 1. For the turning away of Joseph's 1 anger (vv. 18-32). In this plea he re- . cited the history of the family, their j coming to Egypt, and appealed to Joseph on tiie basis of the effect upon Jacob, their father, if Benjamin were | not permitted to accompany them home. In most powerful and persuasive language he set forth the love of Jacob for Benjamin, the sou of his old age, and the sole survivor of his beloved wife. Rachel. His plea was us much for Ids father ns for Benjamin.
2. That he himself might be kept in

that Is, as being worthy of tiie trust reposed In him by Jacob his fattier. III. Joseph Reveals His Identity
(45:1-15).
After such a plea ns Judah had made It Is not surprising tlint Joseph could uo longer restrain himself. 1. He declared Ids identity (vv. 1-3). This act on the part of Joseph troubled them. It ought to have made them gltnl. Under ordinary circumstances tills would have been a time of exceeding Joy, hut their sins were in the way. This not only affords a beautiful example of forgiving luve, hut most beautifully Illustrates Christ's dealing with Ids brethren, the Jews. When the seven years of fijm ine came Ids brethren who had left |ilm and sold him were compelled to come to him for aid. Joseph dealt severely with his brethren to test them and.to bring them to repentance. 2. He hade his brethren come near to him (vv. 4-8), When lie revealed himself to them, the remembrance of their sins pierced them through. How Just It would have been now for Joseph to take vengeance upon them. Joseph's first question was about Ids father, showing that his desire was to put their thoughts far away from their crime, lie Invited them to come near unto him and assured them that God had overruled their crime for salvation. They meant it for evil, but It was part of God's plan for good. He comforted them. Tlds Is exactly what Christ will do for tils brethren, tiie Jew*, lie will become reconciled unto them and become thetr Saviour and Benefactor. Just as all Egypt was obliged to come to Joseph for sustenance, and become the servants of I'baraoh through him. so win all the world come to Christ for his blessing and be reconciled to God through him 8. Joseph sent his brethren away with good news (vv. 9 If,). As soon as Joseph's brethren knew him and were reconciled to him they were sent with glad tidings to their father. As soon ns the Jews come to know Jesus Christ as the Messiah he will send them away to the ends of the earth with the good news of his saving
grace.
