of our flag. It is the most beautiful of all ational colors, and has pointed the way to freedom for countless thousands. It stands for patriotism, I yalty and fidelit . to the ideas of America. For 155 years it has been waving in the bre '/.o, the most beloved symbol of ou 1 ’ country. Woodrow Wilson lid: “This flag, which we honor and under which we serve, is the emblem of our unity, our l ower, our though; and purpose us a rati n. It has o other character than that wuich wo give it from gen-
eration to generati n.
“The choices are ours. It floats in majestic silence above tile ho.-ts that execute these choices, whether in peace i r in war. And yet, though silent, it speaks ta us—speaks to us of the past, of the men ai d women who went before us, and of the rec-
ords they wrote upon it.”
On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress decided “that the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen
a blue field, representing a new constellation.” In the ii tervening years it has remained unchanged, save only f>r th • occasional variation in the number of stripes end the addition of a star for each new state. The story of the flag is the story of the natiu . It hr.s kept pace with the march of events that followed the Rev lution, and has braved the battle and the breeze during more than a ci ntury and a half of national
growth.
Its influence has gradually .extended arou I the globe, and in our generation the sun never sets on the stars and stripe-. Every minute of the Jl hours, somewhere on our planet the folds of 011 Glory are flying in the breeze. It is the custom of the U. S. Marine. to rais, the flag every morning at a o'clock. It remain- flying until
sunset.
Three hour- after the U. S. marines at New V rk, H -ton, Norfolk and
stripe-, alternate red and white; that other cist coast naval stations have |
along the Pacific seaboard present arms to the colors as they are hauled smartly to the stop of the flagstaff— the time interval varying only when daylight saving is in vogue. Ab ut two and a half hours later the' ceremony is repeated in the Hawaiian islands. More than five hohrs have rolled around before the soldiers of the sea in the far off Philippines, and at virtually the same hour in i Shanghai, China, the marines of the Fourth legimert hoist the flag above j their regimental headquarters. Several hours later the westward march of daylight catches the fluttering folds of the Stars and Stripes flying over American consulates in the Near East or in Europe, and when the sun has pa -e l its zenith in the Old WuiId, the flag is again flung to the breeze on the Atlantic seaboard. Thus the Stars and Stripes makes its appearance in the early morning in all parts of the globe, and remains flying until the -un disappears over
the horizon.
