Heading the busim > end of the paper will be Maurice Yarger as busi ness manager, and Robert Keemster as advertising manager. Changing the p dicy rf last year, the business manager will lie in charge of the circulation and t re paper's accounts, while the advertising manager will tie iu charge of all advertising and will supervise the -tuffs. There will lie no assistants to these two pn-itions and it was decided that men holding the two offices sit uld be eligible to reelection. Sexsi n E. He will lie assisted by Miller Biuni. witn Madeline Smith completing the department in the capacity of proof editor. over for the rest af the year. The most drastic change in policy was th 't of a system of scholarships to he awarded for efficient work on I The DePauw. This will go int 1 effect next semester. Since (enumeration "ii The DePauw is now in effect through - daried positions this will lie altered. Next year salaiies of the editorial staff have been scaled down two-thirds, while the year following they will lie eliminated altogether. However, the following year the number of -rh 1 larships will be increased. In Cv ease of the business staff, it ;vv;i- felt that the type of work demanded salaries, and they will continue with little change. An extra award i- to lie given to the one of the editors which in the opinion of the board puts out the paper in the best journalistic man' er. All three editor- will lie seniors next yar, and each has worked for throe years on the paper. William HauMiian, Jane Payne, Donald Daoust, and Jed Pearson will direct the publication of the Mirage of 1933, according to announcement made by the Mirage board of COIl'll ol. William liausman will serve as editoi-iu-chlef of the yearbook. Jane Payne has been ehosen to serve :*s associate editor. The managing editor of the annual will be Donald Daoust. and Jed Pearson will be business manager. These appointments were made by the board of control after a careful consideration of the nine sophomore assistants to the editors of the Mirage of 1 932. The choice of these four individuals was based upon merit. In announcing the selections, the Mirage board of control authorized the following statem-nt: "During the past year the Mirage board of control has endeavored to accomplish two main purposes: first, to put the Mirage on a business basis; second, to select the editors on the basis of merit. These results have been accomplished with a minimum of interference with the board of editors of the junior elass who have had complete freedom on questions of mak" qp and editorial policy. Th selection of the hoard of edi tor- for 1933 was the result of a long period of investigation. Tint the decision was a difficult one to make be cause, with the Mirage on a new basis, the competition war keen. In spite of this, however, there was practically complete unanimity among the members of the board of control in all the selections made. "The methods used in the selection*! were as follows: flrst, the nine sophomore assistants were selected 011 the basis of experience, scholti ship, p t forma nee in the early cmnpeti'tion and upon the grade received on a written examination; second, when the time approached for the selection of the new board of editors from these nine, the present Imanl of editors were asked for written, confidential reports on the p ifornianc' of all candidates. The results of then- reports were tabulat'd, and no candidate was finally elected who did not leceive at least two first places out 1 f a possible four in this rating Third, l* .erviews were then grantei by th' board of control to all nin' candidates. In the course of whirl quevMone were asked and dlscussloi held b aring upon the work to b done, the qualifications, p isonal scholastic and Journalistic, of th' candidates. Fourth, a secret piefer ential ballot was then itakeu by th' board of control Iu no instance wa: a candidate selected who had not n celled at |"ast five first choices of a possible six ‘‘The board of control wishes ,0 express Its appreciation of the sup port the student body has (given the 1932 Mirage.” All of the individuals chosen have been active in campus activities. Hausman has served two years on The DePauw staff. He is sophomore outdoor Intramural manager and is a member of Phi FXa Sigma and Beta Th4ta Pi.
