mit the tiniest inmate to escape. Not that any one would want to escape from a safe haven where meals and bod ar. guaranteed in these har4 times. Still, the law must have its little joke. All doors are manipulated from a central control hoard by means of push buttons. This control mechanism is ,‘ituate l on the ground floor, where is also located the visiting room. Here, too, the old wire netting has given way to a glass partition inset with diaphragms that enable the visitor and inmate to converse, hut make the smuggling of articles impos-
sible.
On the second floor is one of the most interesting features of this model house of correction. It is the chapDecorated in modem style, the
civil registration, nearly a century ago. Figures show that births in England and Wales during the quarter ending last December fell to the unprecedented rate of 14.6 per thousand of the population Thi- means the hitth of fewer than three babies a year for every id 10 people in the country In the year 1880 seven babies were bom for every 200 people

W HOUSE OPENS
NEW YORK, April 2.—The old familial phrase: ‘‘Home was never like tin-" will take on a new significance IT i mast of the wayward garls who ■ upy the new House of Detention tTii Wuiiien which has just formally , mil at New York. Nut ’ting min e unlike a prison, yet f iiictiuuing as such, ha« ever been built. Slaading on a plot of 8.T by 20(1 fi i-l. fuimi ily occupied by the old bioi-e ' f delention, tliis modem limbo fur i i ling ones resembles a modern
apattment house mi the outside. The interior, ton. is totally different from the old-style prison The institution embodies no atmosphere of ptison life, and even those whom it is designed to shelter will b referred to a> inmates an I not as prisoners, Tlie building has twelve stories, the lower six of which comprise the prison (pardon! institution) and the upper six will be o upied by the hospital. Don bars have been eliminated from the windows and in their place are casement windows with cross sections cf extra heavy, saw-resisting steel
athnli. and Jewish service adapts
tion.
A modem laundry, immaculate kitchens and dining rooms occupy the third floor, part of which is railed off as a balcony for the chapel. The kit hens are equipped in a manner ^ equal to the most up-to-date hotel. Housing quarters occupy from the third to the tenth floor. Each floor is divided into four wings having sixteen rooms—not cells. The furnishings of these rooms are all fixtures. The old-style wall bunk has been discarded in favor of a modernistic bed. Each loom has three clothes hangers. Unbreakable mirrors of steel are securely ; fastened to the walls. There is also a disappearing table in each room, which, when not in use, may be slid into a grove in the wall. Of course, milady’s abolutions have also been provided for. A neat porcelain basin with hot and cold water adorns a cor-
ner of each room.
The panels of the doors in this luxurious jail are of bullet-proof glass. But it was explained that this precaution is not intended to prevent desperate inmates from shooting their way out. No, indeed. The nonbreakahle glass is used to circumvent any attempt from the outside to free an inmate. , Even the costumes to be worn by the erring ones who will sojourn in this novel house of detention are a departure from the hideous ensemble of other days. Though simple in the extreme there’s nothing repulsive in the smartly cut dresses which will he
worn by inmates.
If the new idea in houses of correcI tion should be enlarged to embrace 1 male prisons, wp may yet see a day when guards w ill v be concerned more with keeping would-be inmates from breaking in than they will be with preventing prisoners from crash-
ing out.

THEY KNOW IT PAYS (Newcastle Courier-Times) If advertising did not pay, Henry Ford would not be spending a million dollars this week to tell the public his new eightcylinder car is ready for the market. Everybody knew it was about ready and he might have taken a quarter of a page to confirm the news. But Henry Ford knows better. Then there is Walter P. Chrysler, who in ten years time has firmly established himself as the third largest producer of automobiles and did it purely by the intelligent use of advertising. Chrysler, too, is spending $1,000,000 this week in the newspapers telling that the new Plymouth car is ready for the market, just as if everybody didn’t know it. But knowing something and being in the notion to buy are different. It is because Chrysler and Ford and General Motors and other successful car makers know that difference that they stay out in front and do business all the time. The most successful concerns in this depression are the ones that have persistently advertised their goods. Note them and satisfy yourself No difference whether it was the big cigarette companies or the local grocery or drug store, the fact remains that those that did the business last year and are doing it now are those that maintained their advertising. One merchant compares advertising to castor oil—if it takes a teaspoonful to move you it is no use to take half that much lake enough advertising to move the goods out of the shelves
