11" THE DAILY BANNER Acd Herald Consolidated “It Warea For All” Entered in the postoffice at Greencastle, Indiana, as second class mail matter under act of March 8, 1879. Subscription price, 10 cents per week; >3.00 per year by mail in Putnam county; >3.50 to >6.00 per year Uw mail outside Putnam county i SKF.n Is it worthwhile—this strupcle for knowledge, this long effort for preparation? A student asked this question. There is a stern law: that everything shall bear the burden of rest. If you submit a column of water or a boiler of steam to a tremendous pressure, you develop a marvelous elasticity latent in every atom, so with life you can only bring out its hidden or divine force under stress of pressure. Until a race of people has felt the hand of necessity pressing upon it, no progress has been made. Here lies the distinction between the progressive and non-progressive peoples. The historian pictures to us primeval Rrittain with its barbarous Saxons. They are given to wanton in lulgence and brutality. Some one brings to them the sense of power. They begin to think, they dedre to know. They feel the sense of need. They begin to strive, and then develop until they produce an Kgbert, then Alfred the Conqueror, followed by Chaucer, the splendor of the Plantagenets, the glory of Shakespeare, and the bards, liberty, colonization and the triumph of letters and art. It is rather a drab meditation that the world’s richest treasures of art, science and morals have come to at the end of a hard day of toil and even suffering. This realization does not throw cheer into the prospect of life so much as it promises glory for I its retrospect. There are those, howI ever, who get great joy out of climbi ing a mountain to sw the sunrise. —SOWER.

If we were to ap proach love invariably with reverence, wo should find that its every aspect contains the soul of beauty. 4Ve should then look for beauty beneath each inept manifestation. How wonderful this would be! The kingdom of Heaven will indeed have come, when every human being has discovered that Lova» is the only key which unlocks the door of life.
