The thriving city of Springfield is locate-1 in the midst of wealth and •--I heautv clofi to the center of the great S!state of Illinois. It is the capital and . -r h.’u much to give it distinction and 1 historic interest. •fi Paramount to all of which is the ' I.iiicidu monument. Out of all the ^ i n. numenty and shrines erected in America to the memory of her mo't I,. lov>-1 citizen, this is the one that ,,maii the mausoleum where lie his - * . :t P is located one mile north ^ j of the state capitol building. It is rlpliio miihid curosity that pulls you j= . t re an i holds you in awe and reverence It is not the towering arrhiti i tural beauty of the monument, with it: four heroic bronze groups, that, giipv you. Someway you hardly feel surprise at the beauty of the land |n or the grandeur of the pile. It (■Co almost small and commonplace .. ou think of the strength, and influi nee of the man it is built to honor. T:u Gettysburg address in branze and other immortal productions are there, but above al lof this there is taking hold of you a feeling of the meaning of h landless influence or, perhaps, eternity. We ponder the words of this man of destiny, and they are simple words, that give you the first source of his greatnes-: "All that I am and all that 1 hope to be, I owe to my angel mother." This woman of aspiration and purposes with romance and dreams in her heart during the dark days of deprivation and want may have thought all had turned to a- ies. Is it possible that her dreams have come true and that out of them have arisen monuments of beauty to mnik the memory of her son? — SOWER.
