DETROIT, Jan. 22 (UP)—An outstanding industrial and engineering accomplishment during the last 12 months has l»ee n the stepping up of the power house at the Ford Motor Company’s River Rouge plant from 50.000 kilowatts an hour to 230,000. Two new boilers, no larger than the old units, but with capacities of 700.000 pounds of steam, were installed, without halting work of the plant, where 120,000 men w.rk when it is operated at capacity. A two mile water tunnel, 60 feet under ground and with a capacity of 650.009.000 gallons of water a day, was built to supply the boilers. Its inside diameter was 16 feet and outside 21 feet. Improvements at the open hearth made it possible to dispose of a sal vaged automobile a minute. The car s are tripped of important parts, shov ed into a haling press, widen smashes them to pulp, then dumped into hot metal mixers. There the various metals melt and are salvaged.

ENGLISH SHIRS DODGE PANAMA CANAL TOLLS WASHINGTON, (UP) — English vessels on the United Kingdom-New Zealand run are selecting routes that allow them to avoid Panama Canal tolls as a result of the depreciation in the English pound, according to a report from Consul (Bernard (Jotlieb, New Zealand, to the commerce department. Most English vessels on this run now go via Cape Horn, taking on coal Slid oil at Daker, West Africa. Others ate going via the Cape of Good Hope, refueling at Cape Town. iBy taking on coal at Kingston, vessels still using the Panama Canal are not forced to buy American evchange at $3.35, as they do when coaling at Colon.

MONIES AT THE GRANADA Two of the toughest gangsters the movies have produced have gone into partnership in the matter of comparative, hut temporary, retirement from ride-taking, spot-putting, alkycooking, and whatever other gentle inducements racketeers are supposed to dingle before their victims. Edward C.. Robinson, who muscled his way into prominence through “Little Ceasar” and James Cagney through “The Public Enemy” in which each convinces one that he is so hard that machine gun bullets would bounce off of him—have taken it on the lam and gone in for the comparative quiet life of bartering and gambling, s The picture which they are now playing together for W amer Bros, details the rise and fall ot Nick the Barber, a Greek tonsorial artist who felt that he could trim beter with a deck of cards and a stack of chips than with scissors and comb. mmm
