a MXvoio tdal/LANTD Epic poems have been written of deeds less heioic than that enacted by Mayor Rolland Maivin, of Syracuse, N. Y., who recently taced 165 women employes of the city and gava them their thou, of taking * year s leave of absence or being dismissed, the Mayor’s action was Ihe culmination of a plan to relieve distress caused by unemployment in the city. His scheme calls for the suspension, voluntaiy or otherwise, of all married women on the municipal payroll who aie adequately provided for by their husbands, the positions thus vacated to be given to men or women who are in dire need. To the eternal credit of the women concerned be it known that practically all agited with Mayor Marvin and declared their intention of applying fc, leava of absence. Of course, there were a few dissenters, but it would be ncih ing less than miraculous if 165 women agreed upon any one subjects I he Mayor’s plan has attracted nation-wide ettention and it is expected that not only othar municipalities but also big indust, ial con terns will follow the Mayor’s lead. Representatives of the American Federation of Labor are enthusiastic in piaise of tha scheme assertmg that if it becomes general the backbone of the unemployment dragon will be broken. Whatever the outcome, one can but commend he courage of Mayor Marvin. Victoria Crosses have been granted for lew.

SYRACUSE. N Y, D" 2. ..Nfo’ tional calamitiee, whether they be thi,,ugh, war, death or pestilence, have always produced a hero and the much anathematized depre *ion which ; now fields our country, in oanmon with the rest of thu world, in its fell clutch i> no exception to the rule Th hero m this case is Mayor Foiland Marvin of this city Mayor Marvin, who incidentally i* the country’s youngest city head, be. ing only 36, recently come forward with a remedy for the acute unemployment situation that prevails in Syracuse and such is hi proposal that it took a higher order of courage to state it to those concerned than is neces ary to put the plan into
effect
The Mayor’s scheme is simply to suspend all the married women on the city payroll who have husband to support them and give their jobs to men or women who are in real
need.

To the credit of the women affected by the plan be it said that Mayor Marvin’s plan received instant approval Practically all have ignjfied their intention of applying for leave of absence to make emplointent for their hard-pressed fellow-citizens. Of course th,-re were a few dissenting voices, but when did 165 women ever
agree on anything?
The Mayor's novel battle against unemployment has attracted mtionWide attention and it is well within the bound; of possibility that soon we shall -ee large industrial concerns following out; his plan A representative of the American Federation of Labor, congratulating Mayor M,arvin m his courageous action, declared that if mayors and governors in other towns and States followed the lead given by Syracuse the backbone of the unemployment problem would be
