Frequently beans kept over winter for seed are found badly infested with weevils when examined the following Ispiing. A few simple precautions when placing the beans in storage will assure sound seed next year, according to ,1. .1. Davis, head of the ento- , mology department of the Purdue university agricultural experiment

station.

Unless stored in a cold room bean j weevils will continue to develop and 1 reproduce throughout the winter j months. Consequently, even if only ,a few beans are infested when placed in storage, these few weevils can con- | tinue to develop and increase and 1 cause large losses by planting time

Therefore, the first con-

sideration in protecting beans is to ( see that they are free from infesta- J tion when placed in storage. Carbon bisulfide fumigation will insure against storing infected seed. To use air-slaked lime for protecting beans, simply dust it thoroughly through the beans so that they wall j receive a slight coating. The residue which will remain should not be removed but allowed to settle through the beans to the bottom of the container. If you have only a small , quantity, say a peck, use about four parts of the lime to one part of beans. If you have from a peck to three bushels, use only throe parts of lime to one of beans. If more than three bushels, use only two parts of lime to one of beans.
