(L Black Addressed First Ward Teachers I he Mary Emma Jones School Parent Teacher Association met Frilay evening at the -chool. The entertainment consisted of songs by the Mother’s Chorus, and the Rhythm band of the different grades, and a, piano solo by Jack Gillespie. In his talk on “Good Citizenship” at the meeting, G. FI. Black stressed local citizenship, past and present, rather than ,-tate and national. One unique and interesting feature of his talk was the giving of definitions of Go d Citizenship from local men in various lines of activity, and developing, from them, points of especial value. In his comment upon the necessity of the individual feeling it hi: duty ao assume all the responsibilities of citizenship, he quoted from Theodore Roosevelt tn the effect that the stream will not rise higher than its source—meaning the community can not become clean and progressive unless the individuals composing the community have those qualities. "Good Citizenship is practical matler, not one of theory only,” Mr. Black said, “and the citizen who demands his so-called ‘rights’, and fails to live up to the duties of citizenship —including honesty, thrift, cleanliness, and progressiveness —is seeking I to build U|sm a weak foundation and I will do his c immunity but little good, and should receive no public awards."
