CHEBOYGAN’, Mich. (UP)—When th^gurtain rolls down on the great liike fishing season this year, anglers w4l Ivave esperi,-need the best year in history, reports indicate. Estimates aie that the 1!).'|0 tonnage will exceed that of last year by 25 [Kir cent. TO FIX HOUNDARY KNOX, Ind., Oct. 31—A survey probably will be made to definitely establishe a boundary line between LaPorte and Starke counties, it was indicated fallowing a joint meeting of commissioners from both counties. Formerly the Kankakee river formed the boundary, but a ditch project completed nine year sago, changed the location of the river at several points. An act passed by the 1927 legislature made the new channel of the river the county line, but it is beI lieved that several farmers living I in LaPorte county are paying taxes in Starke county.

PLAN l S DOUBTED INDIANAPOLIS, Oct. 31 (UP)— Officials of Indiana’s state police today were not enthusiastic about the plan to create a co-ordinated police organization operating along a 125mile front from Racine, Wis., to Michigan City, Indiana. The plan was proposed yesterday by August Vollmer, professor of police administration at the University of Chicago, and will be discussed at a conference at the university Nov.

L’n.

Volimer's idea provided for co-ord-ination of all police forces around the southern end ofTake Michigan, which he termed the “gang-land zone.” It contemplates creation of a metropolitan jsdice organization operating over the entire area, using radio-equipped squad cars in constant contact with a central broadcasting

station,

E. L. Osborne, chief of the state bureau of criminal identification and investigation, viewed the plan as '"good in theory,” but believed it nearly impossible to work out the haniioi. He questioned the feasi-

"FI! get one of the girls to lent! me her limousine, and then I II il.g him and dig him until lie cries

for help,” Jerry said.

Mabel remembered a necklace whit'll would look exceptionally well with tho bracelets and went for that. When Jerry was us dressed up as she could he for the I moment, she looked at herself ap i

proviugly in the mirror.

"There—don’t 1 look rich and careless? I’ll have ruined men piled

six deep all around me.”

"Go to It, girlie," Mabel advised. ' "If there's a sight 1 really enjoy, it's to see any woman put anything over on any man. While I'm on tho subject, you might throw me

Even when she had heard Sadie coming in wit i ie gentlemen, site continued to pi and sing In order to nrou-. t'ucle Steve's sense of decency and g iod taste. She (Inished the song and turned around, obviously surprised to see them standing there. “Oh, hello hi vs,” she greeted them. "I was j ist playing a hot little number a . I didn't hear you

She could not help noticing that Steve was really handsome, even more so than lie had thought at first. Ills lau\ r too was a dignified looking : leman, but raiher inrlined to oh -Itv. "Miss Let. , this Is Mr. HIak<\ our family lav, or,” Uncle Steve introduced them. "Good moiuig. Judge,’’ Jerrv piped in a in ileetto Hlake replb I with a most an etere how do-y m-do. He, ns well as Stephen, v.a doubtless outside of his element, and Jerry's uncalled for familiarity was making him rather uncomfortable. "So you're Mister 'Had News’ himself, the mug who's trying to help take my h a itifnl Wally away from me,” Jerry declared. ''Wefl, 1 want to tell you here and now that you can't do it, and Mr. Lee can’t do. and ...” "I know, I know,” Lee protested "Now please listen. "Y’es. indeed, yes.” Hlake acqul ea< e I. "Now, I . igge*t that you and Mr Lee start getting acquainted by going out to lunch together.” "Lunch—whoops! I’d adore It,” said JetIV "P don me for a moment." She went Into tho hall and had a whispered conversation with Sadie, returning radiant, with tho maid at her heels. Uncle Steve looked positively ill from the mere provpert, of a luncheon hour spent with her. lie looked at Blake significantly and threateningly, but the damage had been done, and he ’would have to go through with tt. In the meantime, Hlake was really being amused watching the forlorn expression on Lee’s face and picturing his utter chagrin at making a public appearance with such a boisterous companion. "If I’m going out with you. Uncle Steve, I must have some flowers," announced Jerry. “I couldn't think of going out without ’em. Now run down to the little florist shop," she said, turning to Sadie, "you know, the place where I got fifty percent, off, and buy me the nicest (lowers you can find—just heaps of them. Undo Steve will give you tho money. Tell the boss to credit me with the discount." Hlake had all he could do to smother a laugh as he saw Lee. after some hesitation, giving Sadie

the money.

"Now I'll go and slip on my hat. Just cut yourself a piece of cake. Uncle Steve, and make yourself

at home.”

On her way Into tho bedroom, she stopped and blew Stove a kiss. "I knew you had a big, generous heart, if you could only he touched.” she sighed. "1 think you're

wonderful.”

I."" nnd Hlake stared at each other after she had disappeared, and now Blake emitted a long | suppressed laugh. “She touched you nil right.” "A nice mess you've got me into, mixing me up with that girl," Lee

complained.

'Now. Steve, listen to reason. I know what I’m doing. You haven’t j the least idea how to handle a girl ike that. If you continue as you began, stubbornly opposing the boy. lie’ll go ahead and marry tier with or without your consent. But if you play for time, got to know the woman, well, anything might

happen.”

“What, for instance?" "Y’ou’ll !nv able to show her up to Wally as site r Hr Is " "What do you think she is.

Blake?"

"I don’t think—I know. She's a gold digger.” "You mean—” "A gold digger, generally a woman. who extracts money and other valuables from the gentlemen of her acquaintance, gen tally without making them any adequate re-

turn."

"I!n\v do you know Miss l.amat ii-'—t :ia of those things?" Lee

asked,

"Well, in tlie first place, every woman is. It’s a feminine prerogative. They start in as daughters, and gold-dig their fathers, and then they develop a sort of sideline and begin gnld.iliL-ging their ; beaux, oh, very nicely, of course. | for tickets to tho theatre, for flowers. for candy, for dinner parties, and auto ridco, and little excur-ion-j. Then they marry, and that’s when tho real came start*. And how they play It! The average married woman doesn’t leave her husband anything hut the gold in his teeth, and that' only safe if It's in the bark of his mouth.” ' I'm afraid you're right." The two men paced the floor In opposite directions, Leo was wondering how he was to carry off this luncheon satisfactorily, but he could come to no concluahM, At last ho appealed to Hlake to Join him. After all, It was he who uggesled It. and it was not fair for him to he loft alone with a little gold digger. Hut Hlake was adamant. It was not his affair, and he refused to get mixed up with It. No, ho wasn't afraid. He rould hold his own against any woman. Before ho could convince him, Jerry returned, to dlspay a chic little hat nnd a gorgeous gown. "Will you fasten this little snapper on my dress. Unci- Stephen?" Leo had to ohlige, even though It was with trembling fingers and scarlet face. When Sadie came In with a tremendous bouquet of orchids, lie looked at Blake disconsolately. "Oh. how ducky!” exclaimed Jerry. “I love flowers when they’re expensive, hut I'm afraid I'm not dressed up to these. Thank you, Sadie. Like my hat. Uncle Stephen?” "Lee, without looking, thought H very nice, hut Jerry was sure lie did not care for It at all. She won! I order ono at once, and excusing herself, she left him to make a telephone call. (To be continued)
