ITIILAPFLPHIA, Aug. 15 (UP)— Floating demur,^y H-side Dewey’s hi turie flagship Olympia in the hark > hannel of the Navy Yard here is a 1 it tie red submarine that may become one of the most historic crafts in t ,■ world within the next two years. T e submarine is the 0-12, which non will he converted into the Nautilu , aftei Jule- Verne’s brain-child. fsptain Sir George Hubert Wilkit: , internationally famous Australian \retie explorer, is having the lit•ubmari remodeled wnth the ‘idea of making the dream of seni faring men f t centuries come true.

He plans to cruise in the

i fr ,m the eastern to the western ! hemisphere, under the polar ice cap. II/.,Ire,I of daring seamen of liff. rent nation have for centuries a. empted s ree the Norwest Pasape. All av,■ failed. Most of them lo-t their In . and literally hundreds f vessel- have been crushed to m ichwood by On Arctic ice-floe- while

attempting the jiassage.

Sir George, who was the first to f!v f roy ,i: • mi sphere to the other via the Noi'.h Pole, already has began the preliminary work of remode]i ing the suhm :i ne. As he is a British subject ■ had to lease the 0-12 through the American firm of Danenhower and Lake for the nominal rental of ne dollar a year. Cost ! of remodeling the vessel will approximate $150,000. H<‘ expects to start i his expedition early next summer,

probably in May.

Co-operating enthusiastically with Sir George his daring project is Simdn Lake, veteran inventor and mamifactutvi of submarines and deep ea diving devices. Lake himself is anxious U make the cruise hut his advanced age he is past 00—bars i him. Hi partner, Sloan Panenhow,r, however, will be master of the Nautilus when -he dives off the Polar ice cap and lides beneath it. The Nautilus will he fitted with a toboggnn-hko super-structure which will enahl it to slide along beneath ! the underside ,,f the ice rap under its own power. Pneumatic drills, ; which will b mounted in the 'hend of a telescopin conning tower, will be ca|»able of penetrating 13 feet of ice, Sir George exolained. Explosives jalso will he carried along for the purpose of breaking th, ice at interval he said during hi recent visit

here.

l Sir tieorge said that preliminary to t '' the Nautilu- will he held off I the M line coast next winter. By 'iinime' the expedition will he ready for the trip from Spitsbergen to free water in the Bering Sea, near Cape

Lisbon on the Siberian side. The explorer expects the trip to

require about (10 days, including a long

STF. GENEVIEVE, Mo., Aug. 15. _ (UP) -The old Mississippi has given back what it took more than 100 \ears ago—the site of the Missouri - first permanent settlement. During the reclamation of land along the Mississippi recently, trace* of the village of Ste. Genevieve, covered by earth, were discovered on the original “Big Common Feld" the

site of the village.

The village was built, according to various historians, about 1735, by French settlers. The Pig Common Field, a tract of about 4.0on acres, .was cultivated by the people of the

Nautilu. village and products divided among

them.

The villagers lived peacefully on this site until about 1785 when a disastrous flood swept over the land. DismantTfhg their church' and a number of other buildings, the villagers moved the town to higher ground—giving up their original homes to the river. Now, more than a hundred years later, the river has returned the site. Although the river has destroyed the structures, it has left remnants of the buildings scattered over the “big common field.” Strew n about, hut where the Mississippi has hidden them under her sands is evidence of other handiworkis of the pioneers. These relics used by tlie villagers are mute testimony of the part that the Mississippi had in adding hardships to the pioneers of her vast valley.
