WILLIS E. GILL, Auditor of Pul | nam County, Indiana. 19-2ts POPPY SAFE PUBLICITY Saturday, May 24, will he “Poppy Day ' in Greencastle this year. Arlangements for the annual sale of 1 memorial poppies to be worn in honoi of the World War dead are pro pressing rapidly under the sponsor hip of tin* local unit of the American ^ Legion Auxiliary, Mrs. J,. W. ('rump, Unit President, annoimced today. May > 24, the Saturday before Memorial Day, will ce the little red flower. ; of remembrance go on sale throughout the city. “1 he Saturday before Memorial ’ Day Inn lieen adopted almost everywhere in the United States ns the ! day for paying tribute to the men ! who lost their lives in the World War by wearing the poppy,” Mrs. Crump explained. The Greencastle Unit of the Auxiliuiy is preparing to give every man, woman and child in the city an opportunity to wear the (loppy this year. We will have our poppy workers in all parts of the city thruout the day and hope by the end of the day to have placed a poppy on
every coat.
“I'he wearing of the poppy has a double ignifieance,” Mrs. Crump con tinned. “The wearer not only honors the wai (lead but ill buying the poppy contributes to tin* welfare of the disabled and the families of the dead and disabled. Every jienny which>the Auxiliary receives from the sale goes directly to the relief of disabled veteran and the families left dependent dependent because of the war. The poppie. are made by disabled men and all work of the sale is done by volunteeis from the Auxiliary and other co-operating organizations. ' I he burden of re'ief work which the Ia*gion and Auxiliary are called on to carry is becoming heavier each year as more and more veterans are taken from the ranks of wage earners by the disabilities of war. At this late date it is exceedingly difficult to win government aid for the men who break down from results of their war service and the res|K>nxilj|lity lor their care calls increasingly on the service organizations. . I he citizens of Greencastle have always made a generous response to Legion and Auxiliary poppy eale, I i b'»|>e that the response ran Ik* even 1 more generous this year for the need is greater than ever. A poppy on the 1 'pel May 24 will mean honor to the 'lead and service to the living.” Mrs.
