t'RNSt’S TAKERS WILL NEED WORLD VILAS V ND DIS K »M

In Recordinr llirthplace of l oreiuncrs Knumi raters 'Inst Put Down Country Vs Known Today

The HlU.OdU eon.-us enunieratol .s who will begin on April - to collect facts i,limit the people of the United States, will need to know their geography and also asomething about the recent history of the world, according to in.'tructiun- which me being sent out from the Census llurcuu in Washington. Among the most important que lions to be asked of everybody in the coming censu- are those relating to the place of birth of the person enumerated and the place of birth of his father and mother. Each person must be credited in the census records to the state, teiritory, or foreign country in which his birthplace is now located, regardless of what the l.iithplace wa.- called or what nation owned that territory at the time the person wa- born. If the person or his parents were born in Kurope, the census taker may have to get his atlas to find out what nation now owns the locality. If, for example, a per.-on was born 20 years ago in the province of Hohemiu, w hich was at that time a part of the AustroHungarian Umpire, the ccii-u- enumerator should put down Czechoslovakia as tin poison’s birthplace, although no such country existed when the person wa> born. If the person was born in Passaraliia :iU year- ago and hi.- father wa- born in exactly the same place 30 years before that, the person will probably toll the census taker that his father was born in

Turkey while he wa- bom in Rus- |,oiu in the United Stat

-in, but the wise census taker will put down Roumania a- the birthplace

of both.

Ily rea-on of change- brought about by the World ‘war and the Treaty of Versailles, boundary line- in Kuropc lave wavered lik. ribbon.- in the wind. On tin present day map of Kuropc there are seven countin'- and one free city which did not exi-t in 1914; and

PUBLIC s\u;

hi boundary lines of most of the old nations have changed considerably. In the Near Ka t, five new nations havg -price from the territory which wa. formerly called the Ottoman Empire. In most instances, the p£rson enum- • luted will know what government now controls hi- place of hilth, for imnigrants and their children usually ’-(tain a lively intoro.-t in the affairs .f that part of the old worcld from which they cann. When the person loes not know w hat ha- happened to the place of his birth, the een-u-■numerator will be expected to he .hie to supply the information. In case neither is familiar with the facts in the case, the enumerator will put down the city or province in which he person wa- born, and the Census' Hurcau in Washington will insert the

name of the country.

If both the [H-r-on and his parent>vcie horn in the United State.-, the n-wrer will he fairly easy, becau-e •ill the enumerator will have to do will he to put down the state or territory in which a person was born, and there have been comparatively few changes in state boundary lines or name i within the lifetime of people now liv ing. If a person was horn in the old Indian Territory, the hirtliplace -hould go down on the census i < curd- under Oklahoma, its present name. A per-on whose father or mother \*n- horn in the old laiuisiana or Oregon territory will be asked to name the state in which his parents’ birthplace is now situated. .. In the white population of the United States as enumerated at the census • >t 11*20 there were 1:1,712,754 persons who were horn in foreign countries; nil there were 22,080,204 ptrsons

whose* par-

ents were liorn in foreign countries. These two das-es comprised :’8.j per < out of the total white population; --(i it may he seen that the cea-us takoi- may wear out several atlasses finding whe re all tin-c people and

thii parents were horn.

I n our foreign-born population Rus--ia contributed a larger -hare than ■■ ny other of the countries as they ' Meted before the World war, the number of per on- born in Russia being 2,O20.ii4G; Germany ranked next with 1 ,!H5.K54; then came Italy, I -
