l.l()l OK LESS POISONOl S INDIANAPOLIS, March 21 (UP) Ethyl alcohol, the "kick' 'in all liquor, rather than methyl (wood) alcohol or other poisons, is the cause of alcoholic fatalities, according to Dr. B. N. Harger, associate professor of biochemistry and toxicology in the Indiana university school of medicine. It concentration in the body usually is responsible for death and postprohibition liquor ordinarily is no more poisonous than imported or prewar liquor, Dr. Harger asserted in an article “What Is The Poison in ‘Poison Liquor’?” in a recent issue of the Indiana State Medical Association Journal. Hi- allegations, attacking reports of fatal do- - of fusal and acetaldehyde in liquor and denaturants in deverted industrial aleohol, parallel findings of contemporary toxicologists, he said. In the pa t year, alcohol caused 4,700 death ill the United States, almost ore-third of fatalities from all poisons. Ethyl alcohol Itself is a poison if taken in ufficient quantity. Phurmai eologi-ts lor years have classified alcohol with chloroform and ether as a cause of death,” Dr. Hargar wrote. "A fatal dose of ethyl alcohol is a quantity only a little in excess of what i needed to make a person dead drunk.” Fusel oil, found in new liquor, is' four tine is toxic as ethyl alcohol, hut never is in suficient quantity to act fatally h fore the subject has absorbed a lethal dosi of ethyl alcohol, hi* said. Wood alcohol only rarely appears in bootleg liquor, according to Dr. Harger. Most chemicals u-ed by the government in d naturing industrial alcohol are removed easily, but originally are not present in sufficient quantity to cause death before eth>l alcohol kills th ■ subject, he said. Deaths from alcohol have decreased since pa age of the Eighteenth Amendment, he assert d, offering statistics to qualify the statement.
