THE STORE WITH A COMMUNITY SPIRIT The J. C. Penney Company is national in scope of operation, but local in service. To see how much can-be put into a community, rather than how much can be taken out, is the aim of every unit of this nation-wide organizaion. The success of each store is closely identified with the progress of the individual community. Each local Manager is a Co-Partner in the J. C. Penney Company, and as such, must assume the responsibility of operating his store for the benefit of his community. To this end he makes an intensive study of the needs of its people, so that he may the more efficiently interpret their requirements in terms of merchandise that is best suited for the climatic and industrial peculiarities

of the locality. I Every J. (Penney ( ompany Manager is a booster for his town. His home is there, his interests are there, and his children are being educated there. It is his,'town. He belongs to local organizations and takes an active part in movements for civic betterment. In a recent check-up, we discovered that 91% of our Managers are members in local civic organizations, hold offce or some committee assignment, and 87' h own their own homes. From a merchandising standpoint, our stores are an asset to the community. Our national and farm paper advertising attracts out-of-town as well as local people to our store, and, of course, to the shopping district. ** j* * i& i. jkM a&

JC PENNEY CQI Following the great World War, in that trying period of reconstruction, the great British nation awoke to the importance of conserving her own resources, finding employmi nt for an army of idle men and women and, in other ways, dealing with internal economic problems. The best minds of Knglnnd, the great statesmen and financiers were called tog, ther in conference, and as a result of their deliberations they launched a nation-wide “Buy F.nglish Made Goods” campaign. With former customers impoverished by war and unable to take the output of Kngli.-h mills and factories, England adopted the old, well worn trade at home idea as the cure for her slumping commerce and SUE MADE IT PAY. The idea was so old, so simple, so often used, that it is remarkable that it was chosen as the means of rebuilding British commerce, of providing employment for the idle and of putting the English pound sterling again on a firm basis, hut the fart remains that no better remedy has yet been found for creating universal prosperity for the residents of a village, a city or a nation. Keeping the home dollar at work is the basis of prosperity. The trade-at-home idea is bigger than individual likes and dislikes; than hatreds and jealousies, thougli these are the eletm nts that work against the full -uccess of the plan. Smith may dislike Brown, but Brown’s dollar in Smith’s cash drawer jingles just as merrily and contains the same proportion of profit as his best friend’s dollar, and, best of all, in less than a week it will he hack in Smith’s pocket for another round of buying and paying. Tlie home dollar is a busy dollar as long as it is left home to do its full duty for the community. Smith and Brown, disliking each other, still live in Grcencastle. Their homes are here, their businesses. Their children go to our schools, their wives to (Mir churches, and all enjoy the splendid advantages which Grcencastle lias to offer to its citizens. The advantages which the Smiths and the ( t Browns enjoy arc all paid for by taxes which Smith and RrowA — and countless others—contribute to the support of government. The splendid advantages of modern civilization are the results of co-operation; of men getting together to build cities— to provide schools, churches, paver! streets, -idewalks, light, heat, power, to promote industries to give employment to labor. Such progress as has been made by this—or any other city —is the result of co-operation. Every community is bigger than the petty jealousies of individuals, and in times of stress and disaster you will find Smith and Brown working shoulder to shoulder to protect the very things which their ill-considered jealousy is tearing down. The building of a bigger and better business re ts with the THINKING people of this community. The quickest and surest way of increasing prosperity lies in following the wise statesmen of England who prescribed a* TRADE AT HOME campaign. Keep as many dollars working in Greencastle a? possible.
