P. j. MEYERS I’lumbing and Heating No town is I tetter than its people. Ride the trains, the busses, or lounge about the lobbies of the hotels in tiie evening and you will usually find a group of traveling men comparing notes. You will get scraps of conversation something like this: “Just came from there today. Could not -ell a thing. That town’s deader than a mackerel.” "I’d cut that town and save expense money." “Yes, Rlanktown is going good. I had a nice business there day before yesterday.” “Had if 1200.00 worth of Collections over there and came out of town with $22.50 and one order. It’s a grave yard.” “Can't kick about Yourtown. They’re alive over there and going good." Listen to these gentlemen and you’ll get a pretty accurate idea of business conditions in nearby territory. Perhaps you will wonder why one town i dead and another, less than fifty miles distant, is alive and doing business. The answer is this: No town is better than its people. It is a fart that two towns, of practically the same size, in the same territory and faring the same general condition , may vary greatly in prosperity without any surface indication of the cause. People do not differ much and "human nature i the same the world over” we are told, but it is equally true that sonic ritie are dead because the people have been gradually PULLING APART and other cities are alive because their people have got the habit of PULLING TOG ETCHER. In the PULLING APART town you will find the people divided by petty jealousies, political fueds, religious differences, dominated by factions and every fellow blaming the other for the unfortunate conditions. You will find -ilcnt factories, empty store rooms, vac ant houses, declining real estate values and men anxious to find buyers for their homes or business, hut unable to do so. In another city, with no greater natural advantages, you will find Im-i-JJpss on the boom, nothing available for nmt, realty values up and the people happy and prosperous. In nine cases out of ten you’ll find the citizens PULLING TOGETHER to make things still better and busier. And this pulling together is more than Commercial Club activity or weekly luncheon- of the Rotarians, Kiwanians, lion.- or what not, It is a contagious spirit of community pride, horn of faith, hope and charity. It is the little things that count in community building as in everything else. The biggest little thing in the building of any city is loyalty to home industries and institutions. The little money that each citizen sends away for a fancied bin gain does not amount to much in itself hut the total of these sent-away dollar, is the difference between prosperity and depression in your city. If you don’t believe it make a little survey of your own. Estimate the money orders, express orders, cheeks, going to distant cities, and check the incoming freight and express shiments. Your hanker, railroad agent, postal employes and expressman ran give you —confidentially—an idea of how seriously these -ent-away dollars is handicapping the growth of your city. “TRY GREENCASTLE FIRST!"
