True-Hixon Lumber Company The “trade-at-home” idea is as old as the fir.-t settlement and as sound today as the day it was first promulgated. It is so old that it is often disregarded as a self-interested plea of retail merchants. Let us assume the merchants, who most often sponsor “trade at home” campaigns, are interested, lii'-t of all, in their own profits. Let us admit that there would he a direct gain to them if every resident of Greencastle could he induced to huy as much of their needs as possible in this city. We must all agree that the retail merchants would reap a handsome profit from such action, but is it not also true that every resident of Greencastle would share, either directly or indirectly, in this profit? It is difficult to estimate the amount of money which goes out of this city and Putnam county every year for merchandise whieh could lie bought just as cheaply here. This community is no worse than the average; it is not particularly afflicted with the mail order habit and has only the usual proportion of those who love to shop in distant cities, hut the average is sufficiently high in every small city to 'amount to enough money to completely revitalize the trade eonditions in every American town. The most casual investigation at tile local post office, (he express offices and freight depots will convince any student of business eonditions that an amazing amount of money leavi the community which ought to he used here in building a bigger ami in (ter city. Tlie habit of spending out of town is not only detrimental to the merchants hut to the entire community. Prosperous merchants employ more help at betti r wages; they expand their busim and build bigger and better store They create a ready and profitable market for the produels of the farm and garden. Their surplus funds add to hank deposits which, in turn, are loaned to promote industrial and agricultural activity. Prosperity attracts prosperity and brings added population. You never hear of people rushing into a dead town, or new industries knocking at the door of a city that is on the down grade. Make every Greencastle dollar work in Greencastle and we have laid a solid foundation for a growing city. The merchants whose advertisements appear on this page are not urging you to buy in Greencastle hut merely a«k you to TRY GliFKXCASTLK FIRST. If you can't get what you want here for as little money as you would pay elsewhere, huy where you can huy to the best advantage. If you can't get n« good quality here as elsewhere, then you owe it to yourself to huy elsewhere. If vou can't get ns good treatment, in the way of service, credit accommodations, etc., here as in any other eity, then these merchants cannot expect your trade. Rut the progressive merehnnts have faith in themselves, their merchandise, their service and their ability to huy as cheaply and soil as cheaply as other business men, and they hack their faith on your own good judgment and ask you to “TRY GREENCASTLE FIRST!”
