“Why did 1 do it'.' God knows, I don’t." These are the w r s of William Thompson, handed down by tradition from January, iKtl, after lie wa | arrested in Henry county, Indiana, for the murdej of Abraham Khineargon, in the forest a half mile west of Little Walnut church in Clinton township, Putnam County, the scene of the murder being on the north side of the road which extends westward from the church, whore there i - a deep ravine parallel with the highway. The hanging "f Thompson was the first of the two official execution which have been held in Putnam county, and tin' date of thi> hanging was eighty-one years ago February 12. When Rhinoarson’s body was found in the ravine, seveial days after his death, in his hat was found: “Abraham Rhincarson, Bloomington, Iowa.” With that as a clew, Constable John Lynch, of (ireencastle, made the tedious trip to the address in Iowa, and learned that Rhinear-on and William Thompson had left that place during the late summer for return to Henry county, Indiana, where they lived. Returning to Greeiuastle, Lynch was joined by George Thompson and the two went to Henry county, where they located William Thompson and placed him under ane.-t, bringing him
to (ireencastle.
He was given a preliminary hearing by James M. Grooms, justice of the peace, and remanded to Circuit Court. Ju go Elisha Huntington presided over the higher court, and he appointed John Cowgill, Edward McGaughey and Henry Sec rest a- counsel for the defense. Delana R. Eckels wa- pros-
