Highway Group 1 rges Higher ( n Tax For Pavement Increase. Data on Indiana Paving.

INDIANAPOLIS, Dee. 10.— Less than half of the highways in Indiana that carry two-thirds of all traffic are well paved, according to a statement issued today hy the Indiana Good

Roads Association.

The state highway system is composed of 5,000 miles of the most traveled roads, state records show. Of this mileage, 4,000 miles carry two out of every three cars traversing all local and state roads. At the present rate of progress, the state system will not be completely paved for

17 years, or until 1045.

The Indiana Good Roads Association points out that cars in traveling even over good gravel roads incur an extra expense over pavement travel of at least one cent a mile. Indiana at present has nearly OOfl,000 motor vehicles, most of which op? crate over considerable mileages of state highways. Careful estimates indicate that at least half of these motorists travel 2,000 miles earh over roads that collect extra tolls through greater gas consumption, tire wear and other items. These losses r ()r the‘000,000,000 miles so traveled total at least $0,000,000 yearly, the

roads association declares.

To offset and eliminate this loss, the roads association advocates the raising of the automobile license fco hy about five dollars so that the average fee will be about $11.50. Such

poli- Monday in an attempt to iden- j action, it i. asserted, will both retify the chickens, which they were | duce motoring costs and accomplish sure of being able to do, because of J the paving of the state highway sysdistinctive marks which the flock I tern in a trout five years, in addition bore. to widening overcrowded roads.
