VTR.WKL and cruBhed r<x k r wear out tires twice as fast as j»aved roads. If v<ui n proof of that statement, we can furnish it. There are about 5000 miles of roads on the state hi liway system. More than two-thirds of all the aiitopp : u traffic is concentrated on less than 4000 miles of t 1 system. I>ess tfian half of this is paved. The rust i - - irfaued witli jrravel or crushed rf>ck. At the present m' i I progress, the whole system will not be paved until 10 15; seventeen years from now! l.verv automobile owner who doen anv thinking at .11 wants the entire state highway system paved within ihe next live vears, if at all possible. He wants more road added to the present system. These accomplishment- will not he possible under the present income of the N Highway '*Tpartment. But this income can he increased if we raise the average vehicle license fee about $5 —less than one-tenth tincost of an ayerage set of tires. Raising the average vehicle license tax from the pn - ent figure of $(>.59 to about $11.59 will provide eno i money to finish paving the state highway system will . i the next five years, and will permit necessary widening of highways now paved hut overcrowded with tniPiu. We think this w ould l*e a sensible investment.Thu pavt I roads will decrease our lire costs by an amount far more than the amount of the whole fee—after it is increa-ed! Think that over! Talk ti lth your representatives in the. legislature about it! Iruliana needs more paved roads!
