ago and had seen a hat in her shop window which she very much admir-
ed and desired and had instructed him to come to Brazil and buy the hat and have it mailed to her. The young man described the hat minutely saying it was of blue velvet trimmed m gold. The hat was found and the stranger then presented a check fori *2(: payable to Harry Goetz and sign- i el by Mrs. C. W. Goetz. The check 1 '•'as marked “on allowance” and he explained that this was one of the weekly check- his mother sent him to
pay his expenses at DePauw. Mrs. Davis was suspicious of the
check and told Adams she would have to go to the hank to cash it as she had ju-t banked the day’s receipts ami did not have enough money to cash it. Adams sat down and waited patiently while Mrs. Davis went to the Citizens National bank with the check. She was advised to call up the Marion County State hank on which the check was drawn and cn doing so was informed that Mrs. Goetz had no account there. ’Ihe Indianapolis city directory was then consulted by Mrs. Davis and she discovered that no one by the name of Goetz had an account there. Mrs. Davis then culled the police and returned to the hat shop where Offocer Matthews arrived at the same time. Adams wa- till sitting patiently on a setee waiting for hi- change and when confronted hy Mrs. Davis with what she had learned first claimed that some mistake ha I been made but later broke down and confessed that the check was bad. He was taken to headciuartei s where he told police that he had lost his job in an Indianapolis department store several weeks ago and as he had always contributed $10 a week to the support of his widowed mother he had decided upon this method of obtaining the
cash when he ran short of money. Adams claimed that this was the |
first time he had attempted to pass a had check and his actions appear to confirm his story but in his pockets was found a memorandum book with amounts of money noted at various dates during the month which would indicate that he had been at the had check game for some time. He also had another $20 check made out in the same way and about a dozen blank checks of the Marion County State
bank in a bill fold.—Brazil Times.
Members of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity stated Friday morning that they had no one by the name of Ralph Adams or Harry Goetz in their organ! zation.
