EDWARD S. SHUMAKER Edward S. Shumaker, superintend- i ent of the Indiana Anti-Saloon Lea- I gue, who dropped his fight against the serving of a State Farm sentence J for contempt of the Indiana Supreme ^ Court, has many friends in Green- | castle, where he has often visited and worked. There will always remain a grave doubt in the minds of many people i as to whether or not Mr. Shumaker was guilty of the charge of contempt, i He said he could not appeal the case ( to the United States court because of , the lack of funds. He said he had , spent hi? savings, some $f>,000 in his fight against the sentence in the Indiana courts and lost. To have car- j ried the fight further would have i meant the spending of that much or , more in the appeal. It is more than many individuals could spend in their j own defense. The Indiana Supreme Court takes ) some queer turns as was shown in the case of the fight of Judge Dearth i and George R. Dale of Muncie, in , which the highest court in Indiana) said in its opinion that “The truth is ! no defense.”

State Teachers’ Association. The women attempted to pass an-

other car and were forced into the ditch. Both suffered the loss of teeth, and cuts and bruises. John King, of this city, who was passing, brought the injured people to Greencastle where they were treated at the office of Dr. W. M. McGaughey.
