Party leaders felt that the G. O. P. showing in thi> .-tale would have .. decidedly inipoitant eb*rt in the N'o

From the moment that the earliest returns were tahnlated, it wa- ap parent that the forecasts of Republican leaders hail been conservative. ' Subsequent return- served inly to 1 widen tbe margin between Gatilinc , and Moran, and Hale and Holme . Indications were that the Republican majority would exceed 70,000 votes and some predicted it would be nearer 80,000. In 11)21, the Rcpub lican margin of victory was only .'bi, 000, and in 1920 the majority drop-
ped to 20,000.
Although political leader- had fore cast the heavie.-t vote ever recorded in Maine, it appeared that the total would not equal that cast in 1921. The total vote in 1921 was 2.73,907. With 99 out of n.'W precinct yet to be heaid from the aggiega'e vote in ye-today's guiiernatorial eon-
