est planks imaginable.

And seats! Well, the picnic variety. Possibly two had desks and were used by the “big scholars." The remainder of us urchins sat on long benches, and as l recall it, they bore evidence of much rough usage from jack-knives and kindred weapons. The present building was first occupied October ?‘t, 1879. Dick Webb was the teacher. Plastered walls! A new black-

morning, how we all hastened to school to get out new seat assignments. We faced the south and my place was nn the first row just west of the stove well on in front by the middle window. Billv Duree was my buddy. 1 think it must have been on that dav that 1 decided to become a school teacher. Things were so interesting. and so new. f must relate one other incident that happened on that particular day. The new wood stove was hot. and oh my, how it did roar. So loud that the teacher sent Grant Goddard out to see if the house were on fire twice before the fir*t recess. Each time he c-arae back, he reported “all well.” Grant was the new janitor. He did nil the sweeping, carried in some of the wood and built the fires each morning for the enormous price of four cents each day. Of course he had the honor of carrying the key to the new building as part pay. So much for that part of my story. Now I hope I am not trespassing on good nature if I take up the teaching force, beginning after Indiana had been declared winner in having the best school system in the United States at the Centennial at Philadel-

phia in 187G.

Joseph Gregg was my first instructor. School opened Monday morning, October 1st, 1877. I recall that day as well as if it had been only yes- j terday as we came into Granny Gas-1 kill's orchard just in time to see the ! new master enter the door with a | chair in one ham! and a bell in the ! other. I carried ray new book, a speller, my only assignment for the year. I must learn my letters first and then 1 spell that column “ha,” “ba ” “hi,” | etc. You recall it, I see, that is some ' of you whose hair is covered with j the snow that never melts. R. T. Webb was here the next two j terms. He came because he was a 1 hoy-tamer, and some of you girls may recall how hard he could whip too. I By the way. he was killed in an auto accident a few years ago while on a pleasure trip in California. Isom Wright, the best penman of that dav, j ivune for one year and then F. !,.
