sums are being sp<nt by the German j government and by German taxpay- ■ ei to equip the n; thin with an efficient fighting fleet. The German naval budget, amountinv to 221,000,000 maiks this year is huger thin that "f Italy and falls short of French naval expenditures by only about 20,<100,000 marks. Thi* utpiising fact is explained by Germrfn naval exjiert by numerous fini ncial disadvantages to which the German navy is subjected, and to which other important navies are im-
one.
j ‘'Tin iiuiser “Koeli!," launched a ♦ ew i.ays ago at VV'illielmshaven, is X itest a i' its ■ thli epuntry’s oaritime forces. During the pa.-t i three and a half year-, Germany has ouietly and without causing a largo .plash put four new cruisers and twelve destroyers into commission. Six armoured battleships have been modernized as a substantial eost. They have been equipped with new machinery and the> have acquired anti-aircraft gun . The old 11,800 ton battle-hip “Zaehm en” has been transformed into a wireless controlled target ship at a cost of 2,5(10,000 marks. Finally, t ie Reichstag has aporoprinted the fit -t (piota of 80,000,000 marks for the construction of a new 10,000 ton armoured cruiser, which is to he the fil-t of a series of
four similar vessels.
Nineteen fighting craft, constructed or approved by Germany since 1924, are costing the country 370,000,i:00 marks, a sum which will he ineleased to 500,(1(10,000 marks as soon
:
es embrace 10,000,000 marks for thdredging of a new channel at Wilhelmshaven, the North Sea naval base, and correspondingly large sums for experiments with oil-driven engines, guns, torpedos, explosives, signaling
apparatus and mines.
An English naval observer recently pointed out the astourwlingly high cost of each German fighting ship as compared with a British warship. He estmated the cost of the projected
two-
thirds the cost of H. M. S. Hood, a
vessel of 41,200 tons.
Germany’s new 6,000 ton cruiser.are costing 36,000,000 marks each, of which 12,600,000 marks are alone de-
voted to armament.
There are big outlays and the supposition is justified that Germany iinjecting a maximum fighting efficiency into every inch of the new war- ^ shps, the size of which is limited by I
the Vercaille- treaty.
In view of the recognized importance of submarines and aircraft m any future war it must he admitted however, that Germany’s fighting ability is impaired by the complete lack of both these weapons, which are forbidden to Germany by the
pence treaty.
Germany has not yet built nmany fighting ships as the treaty allows, and the navy still includes antiquated vessels, 25 or 30 years old, although the treaty permits Germany to replace them at the age of 20.
