r- SYNOPSIS
Mona Oale, a cabaret dancer, is that to death in a tcuffle between two of her admirers. Jack Waring, <step*vn of o wealth]/ lawyer, ami Jim Boyd, alias Carter, alias Freer, an underworld leader. Boyd knocks Waring down and. placing the gun in Mr hand, flees. Waring is blamed for the killing. Although he feels a strange attraction for the youth, Boyd does not know that Jack is his own son who was taken away by his wife, Ruth, twenty years before. Jack’s half-sister, Sylvia Waring, is confident of his innocence and goes to the dead girl's apartment with Tom Hardy, a newspaper reporter. After Hardy and the police have
ot a row of barred rooms in which only men were being held until their cases were settled. As Sylvia entered the long corridor upon which the cells looked out, she was permeated by a sense of darkness and tragedy that lay in the atmosphere. She saw a tall Negro come to the bars of his cell and look at her with hopeless yellow eyes. In another cell she heard a man crying out insanely, “They're after me! They’re after me! "Me? Say, I should worry what happens to that guy! But, say! I’m going." "I'll take you ns far as your hotel, if you like." ho announced, taking
her arm.
"That ain’t necessary," she said. “Thanks, but I know Chicago even after midnight, like an open book. But say. Jim. Give me your address, will ynu? I’m thtnkln' of taking a Hat o' my own soou, an’ I'll have you over for a call.” He scritililetl his hotel address for her on a hit of scrap paper, and felt perfectly safe In doing so. For he was positive that tho girl was perfectly harmless and had believed every word lie told her. They separated in front of tho apartment after Sylvia had promised to call him soon again. When ho was out of sight she called a taxi; but before tho cab reached her door she had fallen asleep. She was astonished when tho driver awakened her. For a minute, she bed the feeling that all her expertenct s of the night had been a dream. What poet had said, "A dream within a dream?” Ah, never
mind!
The Warlngs bore up bravely under tho shock of Jack's imprisonment, visiting him dally with words of encouragement. Nulthei Philip nor Ruth Waring believed for an Instant that the tuiy was guilty, though Ituth could not help rememheriug tho erratic incidents la the life ot Jack's father. That Jack was impulsive and reckless, Ruth did not doubt. Ho had weak qualities Inherited nnd acquired. But she would not believe that li" had killed the dancer. She knew that ho would not harm u lly. Despite their belief in the boy's Innocence, the Warlngs did not spare a dollar In securing the best legal talent to defend him. It was just after Jack had discussed the case with one of these lawyers that Sylvia visited her brother in his cell. This was a Uuy cubicle, one
What a word—almost!'

I remember that they were gray, sort of u penetrating gray. They were eyes that well, the same kind of eyes that I have myself. It was so strange, Sylvia. Looking at that man aim. ■ t paralysed me. It was lllio looking at myself twenty years
from now."
"Don't you remember any other distinguishing tiling about him, dear? Was he tall, slim, gray at the
temples?”
"I don't remember—wait a minute. Now that you speak of It, he was graj I the temples. Oh —It's useless!” "No, it’s not useless,’ said Sylvia sternly. "You mustn’t allow that attitude to take hold of you. Nothing Is useless while there's a breath ot life in you. Now tell mo, Jack. When this man entered the room, did Mona seem to know him? Did she call out Ids name?” "I don't remember." "Please, Jackie. Try! Try! Did i any thing? i iM she < nil ont any name? Dick, lor Instance, or Tom or—or Jim?" "Jim!” Jack caught hold ot SyF vin's arms and his eyes wore wide with sudden memory. "It was Jim, Sylvia! I swear It was!" Sylvia could have wept for relief. “Now try and remember what he looked like,” she pleaded. "Ho was tall, very smooth looking, 1 think. . . , Oh, I don’t know,” ho said hopelessly. "I was In a trance . . . Poor Mona!" He begun to soh again. "I loved her, Sylvia); 1 loved her so!” * "1 know, dear,” she said soothingly. She did not have the heart to tell him that Mona Gale was nothing but a common adventuress. What would have been th« use? Culling the dead by their right names does not bring them bock to life and does not soothe the mouroor. "Hut you are aurn that the maa who hit you was called Jim?” "Yes, Pm sure of that nyw, Byb via.
