Prof. A. F. Caldwell of DePauw university who has been under treatment at the Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for the past ten weeks, underwent an operation late Saturday. Reports from his Sunday and Monday said his condition was as good as could be expected. An amended complaint in the matter of the complaint for damages, Charles E. Phillips versus the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago, and St. Louis Railway Company has been filed in the Circuit Court, by Fay Hamilton and Fred Thomas, attorneys for the plaintiff. $3,090 damages are asked by Phillips as the result of being blind in one eye, when -truck by a piece of stone while working with an extra gang, on the right of way of the railroad in Madison township, on October 13, 1924. Two Putnam county young people, Olive V. Caywood, of Bainbridge, a freshman in home economics, and Norman Clodfelter, Russellville, junior in electrical engineering, won a place on the Distinguished student list at Purdue University for the past semester, according to announcement made today by President E. C. Elliot. The two young people are among the 180 persons out of a student body of 3065 registered last semester to attain a place on the honor roll. The Distinguished Student list includes those who have at least 75 per cent of their grades H or A which is 90 or above, and no grades below B. The senior class led in the number of Distinguished students with 53, while the juniors were close behind with 47. The freshman class boasted 44 and the sophomores 30.
always believed in the blood lines. In j this vocation he was engaged until a i few years before his death. He was - a member, and at one time President of the American Shorthorn Breeders’ \ Association, and nationally known as an authority on fine stock. He wa a member of the G. A. R., several times comander of the Post to which he belonged, and served several times on the Staff of the Com-
manded in Thief.
Though the years of his active life were spent in the business he had chosen for his life work, and his time absorbed in its various demands upon him, which brought him in close and intimate relations with many noted men throughout the nation, his tastes were scholarly and he was widely read in history and literature, ami delighted in social intercourse with men of learning and culture. Simpson Farrow Lockridge was a loyal citizen, a steadfast friend, honorable and upright in all of his dealings, who once said to his nephew, “When dealing with men, if in doubt as to what to do, remember the Golden Rule.” He was a positive character, decided in his views upon many questions, tenacious of his opinions an,| not afraid to express them, and hated sham, pretense and snobbing. Mr. Lockridge though making no pretensions had a strong religious vein in his character, and said to his nephew a short time before his death “I am not afraid to die.” At another time he said “I have always repeated at night The Lord’s Prayer and the Twenty Third Psalm.” Mr. Lockridge was always and everywhere a courteous gentleman. He was always fearless in life, in defense of right and met death with unflinching courage, as he joined the innumerable hosts whose silent tents are spread on fames eternal camping ground.
