ST.VOPSIS Boh TVainwripht, a young millionaire, goes to Coney Island In search of excitement. Hr falls in love with Jane Wellman, daughter of the owner of the Ferris wheel, A gang of bootleggers irant the site of the, wheel for additional pier space and kidnap Jane. Hob rescues her. Later on they set fire to the ichcel while Jane and her father are in the ears. Bob is seriously injured white rescuing the old man. Dr. Graves, who alt ends Hob, tells Jane that Boh is already engaged, so Jane accepts Tammany Burk, Bob's best friend. Bob docs not know this yet and has arranged for a new v ' eel to be built. Cooper and his gang are captured by a government cutter, all of them getting ten years or better. Jane dreads her next meeting with Bob very much, but knows that it must come.

She had not gone near him since his Illness, although she had rent frequent mi little bunches of Powers which she had carefully selected herself— from the leading Coney Island florist: spending money for them which she could not well afford. Finally, Bob had sent for her. Sho must go. Sho began to wonder how she could bear the Island In all Its fantastic unreality. Yet It seemed to spread out Interminably before her. She entered the deserted Freak House and found Bob, alone, seated In Jingles’ chair. He smiled, n wan smile, for, like the clown, ho was condemned to the chair for a time. She managed to summon a smile, and she tried to ho the Jane that she had been. Ho extended his hand In greeting. “Jane, I’m sorry the nurse isolated me during my Illness. I’m

In my life. I was calling your name and that old ass misunderstood me. Ho always was hard of hearing but ho won’t admit It." Jane sat back In her chair and gripped its sides until the blood left her Angers. “—One night In June, filled with anger because you had not kept your appointment, not knowing— of course—that your father was 111, I went up to New York and got mixed up in a so-called ’wild party.’ That was the night 1 knew I loved you. 1 never Intended to come back to Coney Island but I did. You drew mo back. I wanted to ask you to marry me the night I kived you but I didn’t have tho nerve ” "Why?" she questioned eagerly. “I expected you to ask me.” 1, "Why? bocause I was too cowardly. Because I was fearful of what the world would say, If I, Robert Gordon Wralnw right IV, were to marry a Coney Island ticket seller.” “What has tho ‘world’ got to do with It?" “Nothing. I only thought It did. I was going to ask you to marry me on the night of the Are, but, the same morning, you told me I needed a shave and, naturally, I went homo to take a shave.” “Did you have to shavo because you were going to ask mo to marry you?" she questioned, knowing full well what his reason was but such Is tho heart of woman. Sho wauled to hear It all. "Now, Jane, you know I rouldn't propose without kissing you and mo-t girls have tender skin." Both laughed. Tho tension became lighter. “Just who arc you. from the Idea but they were powerless. In fact, 1 made a bet wi’h another young fool llko myself that I could have you in my apartment within a month on a party.” Ho paused. Her eyes were wide with wonder. Sho was rapidly learning what sho had desired to know and the knowledge was com-

“The more I saw of you, the more highly 1 esteemed you. You and your father and Tammany and these people hore have taught me more about Life than I over knew aud I thought I knew It all. Gradually, I fell in love with you. One night In June ” “June!” she ejaculated. "But that's the girl you're engaged to.” “Engaged to. Have you suddenly lost your mind, Jane.” “Then It's Joan!” "Joan?” he queried, beginning to seriously doubt her sanity. •’Bobbie, weren’t you calling the name of a ‘Juno’ or ‘Joan’ when you were 111 and wanting her to be with you. Didn't you tell Doctor Graves that you were engaged to

some girl?”

Of course, with women, this would be the most Important point. A great light was breaking on Bob. “I never knew a ‘June’ or ‘Joan’
