SYNOPSIS

Boh Watmvright, a young mUMonatre, plunges into a whirlpool of adventure when he visits Coney Island. Uc is attracted hn Jane Wellvian, daughter of the owner of the Ferris wheel, and agrees to work as engineer, in order to be near her. He frustrates the attempt of a bootlegging gang to kidnap Jane and force her father to sell his site for additional pier space. Later Bob rescues the old man from a burning Ferris wheel and Is badly injured when his rope breaks. The attending doctor knows Bob and, wishing to stop a marriage between Bob and Jane, he tells Jane that Bob f.i already engaged. Jane accepts Tammany Burk, the barker, and Bob's best friend. Meanwhile the bootleggers are planning further moves against Bob, whom they know to be wealthy. Suddenly a light shines on their launch. When they reached the deck, they saw very plainly what It was. A long, gray, revenue cutter, with a swivel gun mounted at the bow, was astern about two miles. Another rocket went up, a signal to stop. A greasy looking mechanic lunged forward. “Full steam ahead,” Cooper ordered, "and alter the course to S. by S. E.” The man touched his cap and lunged off again. A moment later, the stacks began to belch a trail of smoke which blew behind them. The little craft suddenly quivered and both men could feel her sudden spurt ahead, like a motor car suddenly going Into high. “If that d d moon will shut up shop for the rest of the night, we’re O. K. If not—” Grimm repeated, “And If not—” “Well, It's a case of speed. This thing didn’t happen by accident. Somebody's peached on us. 1 thought I had my bootleg business covered up pretty well." "Suppose’n she overhauls us?” "Well, suppose’n she does. Long before she gita here, I’ll just dump

wards the cabin. Cooper and the skipper stretched themselves flat on their faces on the bridge. The two men came up from the hold nnd slid for’ard. As he disappeared, another shot crashed Into the cabin. Grimm could feel the vessel quiver again and he knew she was running under a head of steam that might, at any moment, blow them to Kingdom come. The Government craft was hardly five hundred yards behind them, when Grimm slid down the rope into the hold. “Heave to.” The order came from a sinewy man standing for’ard clad In a sou-wester and wearing a cap. Almost imperceptibly, the little vessel hove to. "Hey!” he called again, as the Government craft came almost alongside, “drop that hook of yours. We want to take a look

at you.”

Cooper and the skipper came slowly down the bridge stairs and the little anchor chain rattled through its length and the vessel came to a eudden stop, heaving gently on the waves. A second later a small gangway slid across to the rum runner and the Government men came aboard. He met Cooper and the skipper, looked them over, examined the case of splintered bottles, whiffed the deck and came over again. He took out a note book and pencil. “Looks like we’ve got the goods on you. Name, address and crew.” With sullen air, Cooper gave the Information. One by one additional government men were bringing into view the remainder of the crew, six men besides tho captain. The names and addresses of all were “Where’d you get this stuff?’’ "Consigned to mo on the Glut Olsen, tramp—” “Well, give me the whole story. Don’t have mo asking you questions all night and straining my voice.” "—bound from Bremen to New Y'ork—inbound,” he answered. "Wbo’e the European consignor?”

"Drop that book, we want to take a look at you.”

fO'ont Twenty crates of bootieg into the Atlantic Ocean—that's all.” "What about the kldnappin’ charge against me?” “Well, what about it? You take them chance*, that's all. Are you a good swimmer?” "What, in this choppy sea, with ] a S. by S. E. course that’ll carry J us twenty or thirty miles to sea? 1 What do you think I am, a human

Leviathan?”

“Shut up an’ keep your eye on

that boat.”

Cooper began to tramp back and j forth to master hIS nervous agita 1 tlon and Grimm stood and looked. He tried to pierce through tho veil 1 of smoko that the stacks of the “rum runner” was laying on the ocean. When he looked around j again. Cooper was mounting the little bridge. Grimm saw him talk lug excitedly to the skipper, and started for the bridge himself. “Hey, you,” Cooper yelled, “stand by to help with that hatchway.” Several men came running toward the hold hatchway. Grimm lent a willing hand. A moment and It was off. Two of them lowered themselves into the hold. "Make It snappy, hoys. There's a cell with bars on It at the end of this trip if you don’t.” The first box of liquor made Its appearance and was followed by a splash. While they were waiting for the second, Grimm looked about him. With a gasp, he noticed that ♦ho whole ocean *-as a sheet of silvery radiance and that the wind had shifted. The heavy smoke wafers were being sent whirling out to sea. Tho Government cutter was hardly half a mile behind and the rum runner was In full view. The second box came up. There was a report and a shell sung overhead. The second box went overboard as Grimm crouched back from the rail. Another greasy looking individual crouched past him to a mysterious Object covered with a tarpaulin. He Jerked it off, disclosing another swivel gun. The little vessel quivered again with the report that followed. But still the Government cruiser came on. When the third case appeared from the hold, Grimm throw himself flat on his face. A shell sang its way through the railing of the vessel alongside the swivel gun, taking part of It and the case was a mess of splintered glass and strongly smelling liquor. The rum running gunner retreated from the rail and crawled on his belly down the companionway to-

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen of the basket ball world. We wish to announce that after due conration we have reached the conic lu-ion ;hat Greencastle must defeat th v Elwood high school team here on Saturday night to regain favor in the eyes of the sports writers over the .-■tate. At present the Tiger Cubs -ave won six straight games and lost the last three. The scores and total points for Rausman’s proteges and their opponents are:

en Greencastle on Fritay night, we really wanted to see what they had down there. Well, we couldn’t tell; Coach McConnell used his second-1 string men. —o— As George Daugherty expressed it in the Princeton Clarion-News yesterday, Greeneastle's Tiger ( libs could give Ellis plenty of straight dope on McConnell’s Tigers. Princeton is good, I’ete, but by gum, we believe Greencastle could beat ’em again on the home floor. What say, George? —o— Aleck in a consolation message as result of Washington’s victory over the Cubs says: . We can tell you how to get back on the win side of the ledger. Play all teams just like you played Washington and eight out of ten will fall. —“Hardwood Hash.”

you are not. DON’T force the referee to penalize, the home team for unsportsmanlike acts by the crowd, such as yelling or whistling during free throws, or objecting to decisions by the official-. Give the visiting team the kind of treatment you want other schools to give our team. REMEMBER th> referee never changes his decision and his word is final. Remember to keep your seats until the game is ended as the referee could foul the crowd for getting on the floor.

He had crept closer to the liquor and the voices bad floated to him distinctly from the deck above. “Yep, there’s another hiding out in the hold.” "Come up out of there. This Isn’t a game of hide and go-seek. You’ll get a year more If I have to send a man down there after you.” Grimm hesitated. Still, there was nothing else to do. As he came up hand over hand, he wished he had jumped overboard. Ho slouched forward, and the Government officer looked him over. "Fine looking bird, this one. H’a a wonder some of you healthy, sea faring bootleggers wouldn't get a job and go to work. Ob, BUI," he called sharply and a mechanic came hurriedly across the gangway. “Get up a full head of steam and land her.” The mechanic hurried below. "Meanwhile, will you gentlemen kindly cross the gangplank and we'll give you a nice little ride into Coney Island.” Headed by Cooper, the procession of bootleggers crossed the gangplank and placed themselves Involuntarily In charge of the United States Government, In all probability for someitme to come. The gangplank slid back, the slightly damaged UtU* rum runner's anchor rattled up until It was caught in the hawser hole and thei vessel slid forward, convoyed by the gray Government craft.
