TELEPHONE AND AUTOMOBILES The human being is a queer animal. He does not seem to object to the price he pays for luxuries, hut is eternally fighting the price of the nece itie.s of life. There are more automobiles in Putnam County than telephones. Your county ha- as large a telephone development per unit of population as any county in the state, yet Putnam County last year paid more than ten times as n.ueh for gasoline and oil with which to run its automobiles as it paid for exchange and toll line service combined. If the upkeep, repair, depreciation and running expense, including tire , ga-o-line and oil, of each automobile is one dollar per day, the people of thi(uunty spend annually more than $3,000,000 on automobile . not including the purchase price. This is twenty times as much as is spent for telephone service. Yet the telephone is just as essential as the automobile and costs only a fractional pari as much. The truth of the cu -e i that no modern invention tills the absolute need of community life, and eo.-D as little, as the telephone. . TELEPHONE AND GOOD ROADS Your telephone system is similar to your highway sy-tem. Each is a means of keeping you in touch with your neighbor, d he fee imple (ownership) of your highways belong to the abutting property owner, yet you have the use of these highways and pay to keep them in repair. Still you do not own the roads. The property ownership of your telephone sy - tem belongs to the stockholders, yet it is dedicated to public u e, wholly governed and regulated by the public which uses it. Your avenues of communication,—roads and telephones,—are absolutely .■ cntial to community life. Just as the dirt roads of a few years ago no longer meet the public need and are being replaced by good gravel and concrete highways, o the former grounded line, open wire, magneto telephone s; -'err. have pad to he replaced by a full metallic, cable constructed, common buttery plant in order to meet the demands for service. Like your roads, telephone service is good, bad or indifferent just in proportion as you pay to make it so. TELEPHONES, WATER, GAS AND LIGHT Telephones, water, gas and light are classified as utility -ervice, and i're company that furnishes this -erviee i a quasi-puhlii corporation became it exists for the benefit of the public as a whole. Water,.gas and light companies furnish you with a tangible product, a commodity. A telephone company furnishes no such commodity. It places at your disporul a telephone instrument for you to talk over. It furnishes a service only. The value of water, gas and light is individual to you. It is of little consequence to you whether there is another person connected with the water, gas or light plant that serves you or whether there ate thousands, it- value to you is just the same. With telephone service it is different. Your telephone service increases in value with every additional subscriber added to the system. There are more people for you to do business with. The telephone is different from water, gas and light in another respect. Tim gas and water companies lay mains in u street and the light company stretches feed wires. When it is necessary to a(kl another customer to the-e plants, all that has to he done is to tup the water or gas main- or the light lead wires and extend the service into the house. When an additional individual subscriber is added to a telephone plant, a separate pair of wires must be furnished from the telephone instrument to the central office of the telephone company, where individual equipment must be furnished for each line. This, and not the telephone in-trument, account for the heavy investment in a telephone system. TELEPHONE TALK NO. 7
