NEW YORK, July 12—The recent I victory of Walter Hagen in the Brit- 1 ish Open golf championship stamps j him as a super-golfer, the greatest j ever produced in the United StatesIt was not so much his final tri- ; umph as the manner in which he , achieved it that impressed. Hagen came from behind with the old familiar rush; cool as a cucumber when his most dangerous rivals were j already in with cards that required par golf under nerve-racking condi- '
tions.
By winning this year’s title at ! Hoylake ,the New Yorker has estab- | lished a record- He has captured two British Open championships in three i years and finished second a third | time, only one stroke separated him , from Arthur Havens, winner in 1923. |
Hagen was victor in 1922.
Walter has explained to the United i Press correspondent that he prefers | not to be leading at the end of a first day’s play, in an Open championship. He likes to be tied for second, or third or even fourth- This year, when the cards were in after the first day, he was in third place, which suited him perfectly. He suffered none of the strain of pace-making, and there is no golfer in the game with greater j confidence in his own ability to gain i the necessary strokes to overcome a rival’s two or three stroke advantage. By taking it easy the first day, if one could be said to be taking things 1 easy when they are shooting a difficult j course under championship rules in I the low seventies, Hagen had some-
Re*. 772-Y thing in reserve for the finish rush.
Brimming with confidence, Hagen went out that second day at Hoylake, crept slowly but surely up on C- W. Whitcombe, who was leading and played flawless golf on his last nine holes—even 4’s—to win by one strokeWhitcomb, faced with the unnerving prospect of being in a position to win his first Open title, broke under the strain. The Britisher took 43 go- j ing on the last round- He struggled j gamely against his faltering nerves ' and his 35 coming in was a tribute to 1
his courage, but it wa* too late-
With 54 holes played, Hagen was on | even terms with his rival. A stiff, fit- | ful breeze was sweeping the rolling fairways. The American pulled some ]
