Owsley first attracted national attention when he became chairman of the Americanization committee of the ] American Legion, a year after the i war. Espousing a doctrine of mili-1 tant Americanism, he toured the i country, making more than 200
speeches in 30 states.
The following year he was elected National Commander of the Legion, and enlarged his speech-making program, delivering 600 addresses in every state in the Union, besides visiting every Government Veterans’ hospital. He visited France, Englanl, Belgium and other Allied countries as the Legion’s representative, and was accorded rema-kable receptions by rules and people alike. Owsley is 36, a nativ of Denton, Texas. He was a, member of the State legislature and County ami District Attorney prior to the war, and later served as an Assistant Attorney General of Texas. He enlisted as a private, and attained the rank of Lt. Colonel during the war. He
