punishment.’’

Turning to the “bloc’’ situation in congress, Burton deplored the lack of interest in primary contests. Then “indifference exists, unwholesome forces poison our public life. A I well-organized minority is often more powerful than the inert mass of citizens who patriotism is only aroused in time of grave emergency. To these causes are traceable the formation of blocs and the vehement assertion of individual or sectional interests. “Never more than now have there been such insistent demands for special advantages, privileges of every nature, bonuses, pensions and relief measures, as they are called.’’ His summing up of the condition which led to his statement that the people looked rather to Coolidge th^n congress for leadership was uttered in these sharp words: “I would that I could say as much for the courage of all public men as for their honesty. The public fancy l is sometimes caught by those who j are*4J)e most vociferous and at the same time most radically wrong. ! What is most needed in legislative halls and elsewhere is courage to , withstand the sudden spasms which 1 are created by groundless rumor or injudicious agitation. Candidates for office fail to realize how much the people respect courage and com-

mon honesty.

| Taking cognizance of “a tendency toward third party movements,” Burton declared “the effect is inievitably demoralizing, involving failure in constructive policies and oftentimes ontrol by a minorities or a compination of minorities. If wc should tread the path which so man? other countries have trod with disasterous results, inefficiency and confusion would be the outcome and there would be an expression, not of the majority will, but of the will of groups and of sections.’’

John Mason is at home from Riley where he spent eight weeks, operating a «temporary electric lighting plant. His equipment included a tractor and a generator which he took with him. Riley is a small place south of Terrre Haute, and it I was a question of whether the Central Indiana Power Co., or the traction interests would get into the place first. It seems that whichever got there first had the privilege of lighting the town and of course Mason won, because he had light an 1 power about ten minutes after he hit Riley, and he got to Riley in high gear, because he left here on the run. He continued to furnish juice to the town with his improvised equipment until his company could j run a high tension line into town and hook onto his “system.’’ It is unneces ary to say that once he got going, no one else had a chance to operate.
