In the Saturday, Indianapolis News, was a letter from Earl Ewan, who is doing newspaper work in Hawaii. It had to do with a visit to that port of | Kin Hubbard, otherwise known throughout the country as Abe Martin. Mr. Ewan’s letter is as follows: Abe Martin stood talking to an interested bevy of men in the dining room of Honolulu’s most distinguished downtown hostelry, the Alexander Young hotel. Nowhere was his characteristic battered hat to he seen, however, nor his flapping, scarecrow habiliments, “nstead, his entire was dapper and hi.composure was remarkable, considering the absence of barbed wire fences and obselete hitching posts on which he is wont to pose so eccentrically and complacently while philosophiz ing in his native Brown county
haunts.
“I was afraid we would miss you ’ he said, as he warmly shook my hand and displayed a smile that would make Douglas Fairbanks envious. There was not a trace of bucolic accent in his speech. There were no distinguishing Hoosier mannerisms. In fact, one felt in his presence a cos- | mopolitan air. For it was not the Abe Mratin of caricature who was speak- i ing, but his creator, Frank McKinney
Hubbard.
