CORDOVA. Alaska. May 10— The American round the world fliers have reached Chicagoff, island of Attu . the “jumping off place’’ for the flight which will lead them from the western to the eastern hemisphere. The three planes piloted by Lieut. Lowell Smith, in command, and Lieuts Leigh Wade and Erik Nelson, hopped off from Nazan, island of Atka, :n the Aleutian group, at 19:10 a. m.

yesterday.

They arrived at Chicagoff, island of Attu at 7 p. m., covering the distance of 530 miles in 8 hours, 50 min. Advices received here showed the flight without incident the machines functioning perfectly, all arriving

together.

The planes will now be checked and tuned up for the supreme test of the entire globe circling project. From Chicagoff, the next jump takes the fliers across the head of the Paciic Ocean from the American to the Asiatic continent and from the western ot the eastern hemisphere. It is to be a flight of 878 miles across open, icy water through a region known for its Arctic storms and through which only whalers, trading ships and revenue cutters on patrol regularly pass. The destination will be Paramushiru, in the Kurile islands. The route will be protected by a patrol of Japanese and AmeYican destroy-

ers.

It probably will be Monday or Tuesday before this flight is undei-
