Warnings of Har Tragic Fat# That

In 'My Royal Cllenls• , M. Publl, the famous Ftvnch defective, writing (,T (be unfortunate Empres,: Kluabetu ot Austria, who Was so foully murdered In Geneva In 1898. says that two strange Incidents Incline one to the belief that the empress received a pre
sentiment of her tragic end
“On the eve of her departure for Geneva she asked Mr Barker to read her a few chapters of a book by Mnr Ion Crawford, entitled ‘Oorleono.’ in which the author descrilies the detest able customs of the Sicilian Mafia While the empress was listening to the harrowing story a raven, attracted by the scent of some fruit which she was eating, came and circled round her. Greatly Impressed, she tried tt> drive it off. but In vafu, for It conalaplly returned, fllllng the echoes with Its mournful croaklngs Then she rap- . cism If I questioned your party loyalty or desire to be bound by the same party discipline and party authority as myself, where the same applies with equal force. 1 am unable to find, after careful consideration, any piece dent or authority for the position you take In assuming to direct me in matters In volvlng the primary which I have called for the 14th Inst., at which no action whatever is contemplated or can be taken Involving district matters or district delegates of candidates. Under these circumstances I am at a loss to know the ground for your action or the authority by which you assume to control in this matter If any can be pointed out I shall hold myself at all times ready to yield obedience thereto, but until such authority is pointed out to me I feel that I would be unwarrantably surrendering authority which has been vested iu me by the Democratios of Vigo county in strict acordance with recognized party precedent and party discipline. If I complied with your or-
der.
With'the greatest deference to your official position, as well as to you personally, I do not feel that I have any right to surrender to you the authority which as been placed in my keeping by the Democrats of this county, or In effect abdicate in your favor the position which 1 hold In the party. In making this statement I want it distinctly understood I am acting only from a sense of official and party duty and do not intend hereby to disobey or disregard orders coming to me from authority having the right to command On the contrary, my position la and has been that whenever I receive directions in any party matter from any source having authority to direct I shall yield ready and cheerful obedience thereto, and whether that authority rests in the Democratic state commute or in the Democratic state convention It is not necessary to determine at this time I submit, also, that the politcal wisdom of having one contest, if there Is to be a serious contest, instead of two. seems to me to be unanswerable. 1 am with great respect, your very truly, ALBERT D. WEEKS. Chairman Democratic Central Committee, Vigo County, Indnana. The Star continues: Randel in bis '’order'’ to Weeks, did not Intimate what would happen to Weeks If he disobeyel "instructions." Intimation has been made by some of the Fairbanks workers that If Weeks did not comply with Handel’s sugges tlon Randel would set a date for a prl | mary in Vlg 0 county for the selection of delegatee to the state convention. If Randel should follow such a course It would mean that Vigo county would send two delegations of sixty delegates each to the state convention. The majority of the local polt- | tlclans were Inclined to the opinion last night that Randel would not resort to such heroic methods. Predictions were made that the Fairbanks workers would enter the regularly called primaries next Wednesday and make an effort to elect their candidates for state delegates. It was pointed out that these candidates are continuing their campaign* the same as IT Randel had not Issued his "orders” to Weeks. i As matters now stand It is Handel's next move. As a "fixer" the Greencastle banker, acordlng to local politicians, has not had a pleasing experI lence in Vigo county this week. It was suggested last night that the Democrat state committee may be called together for the purpose of solving the “Vigo problem.” It was palmed I out, however, that the state committee cpuld not possibly go to a farther length than Randel already has gone. It la said that Taggart and Ralston’s suporters are gallons to keep the Vigo squabble from reaching the state convention and for that reason will not permit Handel to call a special primary for the selection of state del- ; fgntes from this county. Like all peacemakers, Handel's efforts to solve the "Vigo problem” have not been fully appreciated in all quarters Yesterday the Greencastle man came in for some severe criticism from members of the Lnrab-Foley fac- ' tlon. Followers of Fairbanks, bowev-1 er , commended the Putnam county
ffg In Vigo county of late
"Think of a man omiu s from Putnam county and trying to wU Vl county politicians how to manage their own affairs," said a member of the Lamb-Foley faction yesterday, -it strikes us that It Is j Ugt abou ' t the same as ’carrying coals t 0 Newcastle.' You remember George Primrose's old song about 'Didn't He Ramble.' Well Handel's work In Vigo during the past f'-w days brings it to my mind. Why not paraphrase th*- chorus to
something like the following:
“Randel rambled, Randel rambled;
He rambled everywhere, Up and down the stairs. In and out the Terre Haute House
Randel rambled, Randel rambled.
He rambled till Untie Dudley called
him down.”

GOOD BREEDING. Good manners, which Include courtesy, are lubricant that makes tho wheels of business, domestic and social life move more easily. They afford pleasure tuid comfort, soothe the feelings and promote concord and
peace.
Whether or not the manners of UnAmerican people have Improved in re cent years is open to question. There are those who assert that the spread of education has made for refinement and more polished ways, and doubt less that is true to a considerable extent. But on the other hand there are people who mourn what they consider the decay of the old courtliness of manner which had so peculiar a charm.. And It is also asser*“d that the rush and whirl of present business life makes for brusqueness of speech and lessened regard for the comfort and feelings of others. That undoubt edly Is true In many Instances and railroad managers, quick to see its in purloiis effects, are enjoining their employee# to show good manners In their relations to the traveling public. But whether good manners have or have not decreased there is certainly room for Improvement: Courtesy, reverence. considerate-ness and all these other qualities that may be included Jn good breeding, should be diligently cultivated, especially in the home and In the school. Children well trained In this essential will retain It through life.—Lebanon Patriot,
