Retreat of the Russian Army—Its Probable Consequences.

We learn from Lord Panmure's brief announcement, that the attack commenced on Tuesday at daybreak—that the Russians had between 50,000 and 60,000 men under the command of General Liprandi, engaged in it—that the battle lasted three hours, and ended in the defeat of the enemy, with a loss on his part of some 4,000 or 6,000 men, and what shows still more unmistakably the character of the victory, about four thousand of his troops Were taken prisoners! This last anouncement is conclusive as to the defeat being com*plete, and it is only excelled in importance by the assurance in the War Ministers dispatch that the loss on the part of the allies was very small.

A second edition of the ^Liverpool Times, issued at 9 o'clock A. M., on August 18, the day the Canada sailed, has the following: Itappears that the movement of the Russians was in consequenoi ptor^ers transmitted from St

The reasons which Induced the Etn-u

and fix a date for their execution, were the urgent representations of his com manders, who sent dispatch after dispatch to their government, informing it of the dearth of the means of transport and provisions, which was making itself severely felt, and threatened to prove fatal the very existence of his armies if the month of September should find 1 hem in their then position.

In Vain the Russian generals attempted an attack when We made fechnnoU sances The allied generals were top wise and the consequence was tliat t*fce Russians had no course left them but to retreat into the!interior df the country where their wants could be supplied, abandoning Sebastopol to its late, so far as the army of relief was concerned* or to make one more desperate

liarrassed and short of provisions. The Russian army of observation, for the time, has no existence. It must pursue its retreat for safety's sake andinstead of relieving its comrades, must itself seek relief.

The allied commander^ have seized upon the moment when their own soldiers are burning with victorious enthusiasm, and when deep dismay must exist amongst the ranks of the defenders of Sebastdpol, to re-open our fire, at a moment, too, when our approaches are so close to the enemy that hand grenades have become the favorite weapon of offence, and it needs but a short mine to blow his ditch dndrampart into one of ruins—a short rush to place our gallant soldiers in possession of the long desired Malakoff. At the moment we write the bombardment is proceeding from the mouths of such an arament as even Sebastopol has not. until tfy1s moment felt the weight of, and. it is not improbable that by the time these linos meet the public eye, the assault may be made, and a new, and hard won glory added to the united flag.

The London News, of August 16, says:—A singular discovery has been made at Aix-la'Chapelle. In a bale of cotton shipped from the United States to Warsaw, by way of Antwerp, there were found several six barrel revolvers! and a quantity of powder.

The same journal of August 17, adds: A letter from Aix-la-Chapelle, of the 11th inst,,'contains the following remarkable statement: Yesterday a quantity of firearms, in coufte of transmission to the Russian government, were discovered here and confiscated. One hundred and forty-five bales of cotton from Antwerp for a house at St Petersburg, had been declared^ There were reasons for entertaining suspicion, and the bales were opened, when the arms were found.
