Thk undersigned l&el gratified in being able to say to the citizens of TerreHaute, and the people of Indiana and Illinois, generally, that former success and present prospects justifv them iu announcing the Daily ana Weekly American as a fixed fact, and destined to exist.
The proprietors are determined by untiring energy, and a heart felt devotion to the cause in which they are engaged, to make the American a most desirable and readable newspaper.
The following sentiments, will embot dy the political faith of the American,! and will be maintained, in a spirit of courtesy towards those who mav differ with us in sentiment. 1st. A just discrimination in favor of native born citisens, for all offices of trust and profit, in preference to those of foreign birth. 1? 2d. The Union of these States. 3d. Opposition to all local or Motional prejudices, 4th. The United States of America as they are, "one and inseparable/' 6th. No Sectarian interference ia our legislation, or the administration of Amerioan Laws. 6th. Hostility to the assumptions of the Pope, through the Bishops, Priests and Prelates of the Church, or by powers of the Old World. 7th. Restoration of our State naturalization laws to a correspondence with the Constitution of the United Slates. 8th. Free and liberal Educational Institutions, for all sects and classes* with a free use of the Bible, God't iloly Word, as a textbook. 9th. Full tolerance to all Religious sects, which do mot conflict with the
Constitution of the U. S. or the genius of our free institutions. 10th. The 'Monroe doctrine' against colonization on the American oontinent bv the nations of Europe. *4The latest Foreignand domestic genoral and local news, will be carenilly noted. and selections will be made in reference to the maintenance of a high tone of morals in our columns. ifiThe markets, of our own and of the principal oommercial cities ofthe States, will be correctly reported daily and weekly.
All communications of an interesting nature,: free from personalities, and unexceptional in language, will be welcomed to our columns.
