The Council met. Present: James Hook Mayor, and Harrison, Jamison, Shaffer, Holmes, Conn and Madison. Absent: Sibley, Wharrv, ^veth^aud Ross.

The minutes of the preceeding meeting "were read and approved. A*verbal petition was presented by J. Longdon, through the Mayor, asking the Council to reduce the licenBg on Rowling Saloons.

Mr. Jamison moved that the license be reduced to $50. The motion not meeting with a second, no further proceedings were had upon the petition.

The Sexton of the City Cemetery,made his report for the Month of August, showing twenty-two interments during said month which report was acgeptad and ordered to be placed on file.t 1

The City Treasurer made his report which was accepted and placed on file The committee on streets made re port concerning the bridge^,i|j,the. City crossing the canal.

The City engineer was instructed to examine all the Bridges, and the embankments attached to said Bridges, and report the bes| m^^ repainng the same-

It was ordered that the Charter of the City be printed together with the ordinances, and that eight hundred copies of the same be printed in pamphlet form for theuseof said City.

WASHINGTON, Saturday, Sept. 1. The Presieent has removed Richard P. Hammond from the office of Collector of Customs at San Francisco, and appointed Mr. Marcus C. Latham, late member of Congress, in his place.
