H. was an author of some celebrity his work ofMarian Coffin, and others, are well known and appreciated in New York.
The vintage in the Isiand of Madeira had again failed—this being the fourth consecutive year. Much destitution prevails in the island, from so many oersons in consequence, being thrown out of employment. The Jamestown, flag-ship of Commodore Crabbe, sailed on ^the 24th of July for Ports Frayo, Island of St. Jago, Cape de Verds.

tl In military circles, at lenna, the •opinion is decidedly favorable to the Allies in the next assault. The Military Gazette, which for some time has hoped and predicted in favor of Russia, now gives his voice in favor of the besiegers.
It says: "The French engineers have now got so near to the east fort and the Karabelua'ia fortifications, that the first Russian line of defense can hardly withstand the next assault. Gen. Chruleff directs the defense of the Karnbelnaia. It is inferred, by his latest measures, that while prepared for the worst, lie is resolved to defend his ground to the utmost."
