ha "S&. flffl XT. F. Linder. Wo regret to learn that the above named gentleman has gone over to the Old Liners. And what we regret full more is, that he feels called upon to abuse the Know Nothings, as by his reported speeches, he seems to do.— We are always sorry to see men, possessing as fine taints and as many good traits of character as Gen. L. possesses, pervert them to the upbuilding of so rotten a fabric as modern Democracy.
And we have not the shadow of a doubt but that the General will live to regret the step he has taken.
How he, professing to have been, and to be now, a Clay Whig, can affiliate with a paTty that exhausted the store-house of expletives, in order to heap obloquy and opprobrium upon the head of the Sage of AshUnd while living, is a mystery to us. Besides 'tis strange to see a man of his age, change his mind on so grave a subject as national politics. .», ..
#W To-day the great Democratic party meets in the State Capital, to consult together, and to choose the ground on which it shall make its final struggle for existence, feeling that the power that it lias so long and so fatnlly for itself at least, wielded, is about to go back into the hands of the people, where it belongs, they feel called on to make one last effort, to retain it in their grasp.
What spirit will they call upon to aid them now will it, be of Jefferson, of Hamilton, of Jackson, Or the lamented Polk. Will it be of the living Cass, whom they so lately worshiped? Ah 110! None of these would respond to their call. 'Twould be blasphemy almost to name these worthies in connection with modern Democracy. There is but one hope left, 'Tis the spirit of old King Alcohol. Will they call on it? dare they? i.

itST Here is the finale of the snake story, ola-tail of the Sea Sarpent, which has been going the rounds of the newspapers. Some of our cotemporaries in this region, we believe, stopped the press to get the news of the capture early before the people: "THE SNAKE STORY.—It seems the monster snake discovered, a short time since, in Silver Lake, and which has created so much excitement in the Western part of the State, has not been taken after all, though there are persons in the vicinity of the Lake who appear to think there is no doubt but there is a serpent there yet. One Edwin Fanning makes affidavit that on Wednesday evening, 15th inst., he saw the creature, which now appeared to be about a hundred feet in length with a head afoot in diameter and body in proportion. The story purporting to be from a correspondent of the Buffalo Republic, is supposed to have originated with the local editor of that paper who, it is surmised, occasionally sees snakes in his boots. We dare say he had a glimpse of a monster when he elaborated the monster story but so far from having captured the creature, the creature captured him.
P. S.—The snake has dived, and come up in Skaneateles Lake, longer and larger than ever, so they say at Syracuse.—Xew York Tribune.

A Cini.n SAVED BV A DOG.—As one of the city cars was passing down Ful-ton-st., yesterday morning a lady with a little girl attempted to pass in front, the child being ahead. Before the dricould hold up the child was nearly under the horses' feet, when a large Newfoundland dog seeing it, bounded to her, and taking her in his mouth, rescued her from imminent dauger of being trampled to death, brought her to the almost distracted mother and laid her down. He looked up and wagged his tail, and giving a short bark expressive of his delight, and away h© went. —JV. Y. Tribune.
MOVEMENT IN KANSAS.—The Kansas Herald of Freedom says that the free settlers on the Wakamse and at Hickory Point are forming military companies to protect themselves from invaders—that the Free State Executive Committee were organizing throughout the territory, and that "The tide of Pro-Slavery emigration toward Kansas has begun to ebb, and at this time the Slave State emigration is larger from Kansas to Missouri than vice versa. It is a notorious fact that there is not an election to-day but would poll three votes of the actual voters, in such a district, for Freedom to one for Slavery.

It appears that, according to the present law, clergymen of the Church of England cannot drop that profession, and become lawyers, doctor, &c., should they see fit to do so that having been once a clergyman, he is always a clergyman! Lord Brougham tried, the other night, to introduce a bill to .remedy this, by styling it for the relief of dissenters but the Lords saw the drift, and refused to permit it. This appears to be somewhat hard upon the class, for penalties are provided for those who would escape their ministerial responsibilities to the bishops. ^v.
