and carefully written editorial, in which

Young Men's Democratic Union Club of New York," which squints very much towards Know-Nothingism, and to the proper interpretation of which, the Enquirer of the 27th finds it necessary to devote a whole column and a half, things seem to be much worse mixed up than ever. The sentiments advocated by Mr. Wise in this letter, as in his letters, generally, since the election, are such as would commend themselves to nineteen-twentieths of the regular Know-Nothings in the ]and, and barring some characteristic denunciation of the non-essential tho' convenient regulations of the Order, BO

far as we can judge, ho is now .as good and acceptable an American as Mr. Flournoy ever professed to be.— These are strange times that we live in,

and it Tjrould not be at all surprising if the Governor electshould add one more political revolution to his biography befbre he leaves the chair gubernatorial. With such high authority as the Enquirer and the Governor, we cannot see, at any rate, how the opponents of the new movement can consistently maintain the bitterness of their opposition, and wo wouldn't wonder if somo of tlioso who gave the Herald the cut direct in consequence of its KnowNothing" tendencies, should yet find out that we were about right all the time, and they themselves misled by names and words without meaning, or false, into the doing of an unreasonable thing.

The ground-work of Americanism is sound and patriotic and must and will commend itself to the hearts and con sciences of all men who love their country its very essence is patriotism and interested partisans may as well attempt to forbid the harvest to grow responsive to the dews of Heaven, or ripen to its sun-light, as to keep down its spontaneous uprising in the hear'.s of the people, or prevent its inevitable culmination. The machinery may go, the most of it has gone, and we are glad of it as long as it was convenient and useful to the great end it was retained, but

and calmly discussed and awarded more of merit than could possibly have been expected considering the fire-eat-ing propensities of the Enquirer. Indeed, the article does not appear like the production of the regular editor.— So marked is the difference in tone from previous articles, that it excited the comments of its cotemporaries at Richmond, and could not but strike the attention of the most casual reader of the papers '^Whether the article was the result of sober second thought, and sincere conviction, or merely a sugary attempt to wheedle Southern Know Nothings from the faith, we cannot say we only have to remark here upon the singularity of the thing. It was evidently carefully considered. When we superadd to this demonstration of the organ, the letter of Mr. Wise to the

A severe shock of an earthquake was felt at Los Angeles a few days ago. Men were thrown to the gronnd, shelves emptied of their goods, and every house in town more or loss injured. It was preceded by a terrific noise, resembling, as an eye witness observed, the explosion of a powder mill. The houses in Los Angeles »re of only one si.bry, and are built of adobe, with walls two feet thick. Had as severe a shock been experienced here, it would have shaken down every brick building in the city.

Duels are not uncommon, and cowhiding affairs are "too numerous to mention." The latest one took place on Saturday, at Donneville, between Mr. Lippincott of the State Senate, and Mr. Lewis. The latt3r was shot through the neck.

near Santa Thomasa, he sent to Mclendrez, and requested an interview, which was granted. As soon as Melendrez came to Pujol's camp he was arrested, and informed that he had been tried at La Paz, and sentenced to death for treason. Melendrez remonstrated, but it was of no use. He was taken out and shot, and his body left upon tho plains. Pujol then put forth a proclamation from which I translate tho followihg points:

All foreigners who cross the line dividing Upper and Lower California, (unless they are furnished with passports signed by the Mexican Consul at San Francisco,) will be shot. All foreigners now in tho Territory, by tho' tolerance of Melendrez, will leave immediately, and fiiiling to do so, will be shot. The introduction of arms and ammunition by foreigners will be punishable with death. Persons who made common cause with Melendrez will bo shot. Foreign vessels at anchor in any roadstead, with passengers, will sail forthwith, and in case of non-compli-ance will bo regarded and treated as pirates.

Throughout the South the promulgation of this proclamation has created feelings of great indignation. A number of American citizens resido near the frontiers, and should any harm result to them tho consequences will be fearful. Let an American be killed by reason of this proclamation—and Pajol gives authority to rancheroos and ma-jor-domos to' carry out its orders—and five hundred men will spring to arms for revenge.
