TERRE-HAUTE. IND WEDNESDAY, AXTGUSTTT8, 1855.
The Call for a Public Meeting. Our neighbor of the Expresa is wondrously exercised on account of the call, which appeared in the American, for Public Meeting on Saturday next After his bold declaration, a few days since, that Messrs. Morton, Campbell dt Co., had convinced all the wavering and heretical in those regions, he fears, doubtless, that some of their sophistry and demagoguery may be exposed, and, therefore, thinks the present call in "bad taste," and discovers a bad spirit, and "is set upon a false and arrogant assumption." Very likely. It is no doubt in bad taste forlorn# men, citizens of Vigo connty, to call together the people that they may 'reason together.' But it is in excellent taste for some other men to call together the people, to hear an imported Demagogue utter phillipics against the South, and teach our citizens their duty—to give their conscience to the keepirg of a few rabid antislavery men, ('tis arrogant to say abolitionists.) "Now, as the call is to the friends of the Union, the implication is that there are enemies of the Union amongst us." Admirable logic. Most natural deduction 'v., "And because every one of us nowadays deny being an Abolitionist however much, we may oppose slavery and abuse slave-holders, and however frequently we may have heretofore advocated immediate emancipation, and even voted for James G. Birnev or would-be President Hale, these men making this call are 'pro-slavery men' and the meeting to be a 'pro-slavery meeting.'— Herein is vast wisdom and acute discrimination. A faction possess a cherished endeavor to arrogate to their pure breasts all patriotism, and hold all as enemies to their country who differ from them." Herein is exhibited superior purity of spirit and transcendant humility. I may immolate hetacomba and chant pseans in honor of men advocating my particular views, and may declare their arguments a finality, an end to all controversy. But if my neighbors choose to ask the people to come and "reason together," and examine the sayings of these mighty men of wisdom and of valor they are arrogant factionists, pro-slaverv men, and heathens. But we have a party in this section who 'love slavery.'"
Ah! how did you find it out—most modest cens»or of the acts of a free people ?—whence do you derive your authority that thus you send forth your bdl, ex-cathedro, teaching the people of Vigo that it is all right and in good taste to come out at the call of strangers, and that it discovers a good spirit and all that, but it is very arrogant and factious for our own citizens to meet and hear the words of one grown up in our midst, and of whose honesty and integrity we have been heretofore fully convinced.
Alas! for humau nature alas for the Soul(e) of our community! This fluttering looks rather suspicious. If the sentiments and declarations uttered so pompously by his valiant champion were truths, all truths, then discussion and examination—like attrition to the diamond—will render their brilliancy more apparent-—if they were sophisms, let their fallacies be exposed
—if all are friends of the Union, then all are invited to come—if any are enemies to the Uiron, they are not particularly invited, yet we doubt not but that they, too, will come, as such was the case in the days of Job, when we learn one individual was in the habit of intruding himself into assemblies,
where
he had no proper right, not only so, but very modestly proffered his advice and censorship to the President of the Assembly—"quod fuit, erit, et novum non est sub So(u)le!"

XST* The ship Louis Napoleon, arrived at New York, on Saturday, with two men, who had been drifting about twelve days in a small boat, whom the ship rescued. They were Portugese who had been lost in a fog. They had plenty of provisions, but no water for three days.
Cholera in Georgetown, Illinois. Wo learn from Mr. Wm. M. Moore, of Georgetown, Ills., that the cholera has visited that place during the last two weeks, in a most malignant form. Up to Monday, there had been 18 cases and 13 deaths. No new cases had occurred since Saturday, and it was hoped that the fell monster was stayed in his work of destruction.
Sam Slick Upon Happiness I ask again what is happinass It ain't being idle, that's a fact—no idle man or woman was ever happy since the world begun. Eve was idle, and that is the way she got tempted, poor critter employment gives both appetite and digestion. Duty makes pleasure doubly sweet by contrast. When harness is off, if the work ain't too hard, a critter likfs to kick up his heels. When pleasure is the business of life, it ceases to be a pleasure when it is all work nnd no play, work, like an unstuffed saddle, cuts into the very bones.— Neither labor or idleness has the road that leads to happiness—one his no room for the heart, the other corrupts it. Hard work is the best of the two, for it has, at all events, sound sleep the other restless pillows and unrefreshing sleep one is a misfortune, the othera curse and money ain't happiness, that's as clear as mud.
Horrible Explosion.
The drying house at Mr. Garesches' powder works in E-len Park, near Wilmington, Del., was blown up on the morning of the 3d inst. It contained about one and a half tons of powder.
All the workmen connected with its operations were killed at once they were blown to atoms, and fragments of their remains were found at various distances, from fifty to two hundred yards.
The house was literally blown away, not a vestige remaining. The explosion nf the drying house caused a mill to explode it contained about one thousand four hundred pounds of powder, which is less than usual. The engineer sa) there were three separate explosions in the mill.
The trees around the drying house were blown up by the roots and the fields literally covered with fragments of wood, cinders and the remains of the victims. The explosion was caused by.a Frenchman smoking a pipe in the packins: room.
