'k» JSTThe following communication in regard to the cholera at Charleston, Ills., may be strictly relied, on, as it is from one of the most respectablo citizens of that place:

CHARLESTON, July 31st, 1856. Editors American Gentlemen Knowing the uncertainty of common report, with reference to the existence of cholera in any particular locality, it may be of some interest to you to know how matters stand here. On last Saturday, Mr. Osgood, the gentlemanly landlord of the Railroad House, in this place, after suffering a few hours with this dread disease, expired. Such a panic as it created I have not not often seen—all convenient and inconvenient means of conveyance were called into requisition, all going for a short time into the country.

ii

It now appears, however, that the above was rather an accidental case, as it has not been followed by any others. Our town, I think, is in as healthy a condition as could be expected, considering the more than ordinary amount of rain, followed immediately by unusual heat. Sickness, of the kinds common in this country, has been steadily on the increase, and we will, perhaps, have what is termed a sickly season. Yet we hope we will not be visited as once before by the dreadful ravages of this

A RAILWAY COMPANY PAID FOR KILL IQ Cows.—A rather singular action for damages was decided in one of the Vermont County Courts recently. The parties were the Connecticut and PaP sump8io River Railroad Company against Thomas Nelson. The last-i.am-ed individual owns cows, which being pf a vagabond disposition, have a fanoy for promenading on the railroad track. A train was thrown off in consequence, and the company sued the owner of the cows for damages. The judge charged that he was liable, and that the plaintiffs could recover, if it wos proved to «ibe satisfaction of the jury that the cows caused the accident, and that he had not msed ordinary care and vigilance to %eep them out of the highway. The jury returned a verdict for the plainfits for one hundred and fifty-nine dollars damages and cost. ,s atw .«s

We hear that another break has occurred in the Canal near Georgetown, six miles thi^ fide of Logansport. The bottom of an aqueduct fell out. It will be repaired so that boats can pass tomorrow.—La/" American of the 31st.

SEIZURE OF LIQUORS.—On Saturday5 evening, officers Loucks and Gott, assisted by a number of the police made made a descent upon a grocery immediately west of the Madison Depot, occupied by a German named Hugg, and seized two barrels of ale, two barrels of "corn juice," and three barrels of wine.

Hugg offered no resistance* The officers then proceeded to a German boarding house, corner South and Delaware Street, where seized two barrels of ale, and were*about to take charge of a barrel of whiskey, but were spared the trouble by the mistress of the house, who kindly volunteered her services, and broke in the head of the barrel with an axe. The proprietor of the house was no where to be found.—

State Sentinel of the 30th. LIQUOR CASES*.—The cases against Detsierand Hugg, two Germans, for selling liquor contrary to law, were tried yesterday, or rather a portion of them. There were three or four cases against Hugg, in one of which he was fined 820,00 and costs the others are not yet disposed of. There was but one case against Deisler in which he was fined the same amount The "seizure" cases to which we alluded yesterday, are pending against both or rather against the liquor, and will probably be disposed of to-day. We did not learn when they were to be taken up.

The liquor was taken to jail about 5 o'clock yesterday evening. It was deposited in Mr. Wiley's auction room, but the jail was thought a safer or cooler place—part of it was ale, and might sour—hence it was taken there. An admiring crowd followed it up street. State Sentinel of the 31st.

The Mormons Defying Government. Lfite news from Utah confirms the report of the open defiance of U. S. authority by the Mormons. A correspondent writing from Omaha under date of July 1st., after conversing with all the Mail Train Company which had just arrived from Salt Lake says:
