RAIK, RAIN.—We have hard and almost hourly rains, and every shower appears to be harder. Last night there was the most frightful display of heaven'# artillery in the West and South that we ever recollect of witnessing.— Several times we saw balls of fire shoot up and burst like bomb shells, displaying the most- lurid forked lightning, while near the horizon a continued blaze was kept up^ It is said that one extreme follows another, and surely last season and this, is some evidence of its truthful,***.
We hear that some of the potatoes "have become water-soked, and exhibit signs of the rot. The corn cannot fill as usual, so great is the flow of sap. How the season will end is now bard *n. -•lyrass
NIGGER
IS THK
WOODFILB.—The
handsomest looking person upon the platform at the Abolition Convention of the 13th, was a genuine negro. The Journal thinks there were no negroes upon the platform upon that day, and asserts that they were all "upon the fence W
The platform adopted contains so inuch Niggerism, that no "colored gemman" could consistenly be upon the fence. The./Q|ma/.|s mistaken.—-State Sentinel. $ $ rV
No doubt but that many would be glad they could prove themselves to have been "upon the fence," at tliatofoyfennel and gympsum meeting, [j5
RAN
OFF THE
TRACK.—Nigjit before
last, the St. Louis 8 o'clock Express Trayi ran over a very large bull, a few hundred yards beyond the bridge on the Illinois side, and was thrown off the track, coming within a hair's breadth of being precipitated down an embankment twenty feet high. Fortunately, the train was stopped without any body being hurt. The bull was crushed into a jelly-fish, and a companion cow lost the half of a hind leg.— Vm. Qaz.«
Rumored Arrest of Townsend, the Murderer. The Detroit Tribune of Tuesday evening says:—"We were informed by a gentleman who came over the Canada Railway, that Toionsend, the murderer of Dennis, was arrested on the cars at Loudon, this morning. Townsend, with two others, it will be recollected, committed this murder some months since, near Cayuga, C. W., and his accomplices were taken, and suffered the penally of the law. Toumsend escaped, and has been the terror of the neighborhood, evading every attempt to arrest him, adding crime after crime to that of murder. The conductor of the up train recognizing the scoundrel on board the cai-R between Paris and London, and took effectual steps for his arrest at the latter place.
J3T A French officer near Sebastopol, was knocked down by the wind of a cannon ball, the shock of which was so great as to cause a paralysis of his tongue, BO that he could sot speak. He returned to Marseilles and placed himself under electrical treatment* After a few shocks he could move his toftgue, and at length, after an unusually powerful shock, his speech was restored, and he fullj recovered. REMARKABLE FREAK
OF
NATURE.—
The brig Isabella, from Humaccoa, P. R-, has on board a horso, full grown, having but three legs, there being no appearance of any point or place for the other leg. He is very small but remarkably active, and manages, to get along at a respectable gait.

The Los Angelos Star of June 17th, gives account of a naval battle at San Diego, June 13th between a Russian frigate and a French corvette. The former chased the latter, and the captain of the latter, whose name, it was said, was Duschen seeing no hopeofescape, rather than strike his flag, jumped down in? the magazine and blew his ship and all on board into eternity. She was called Egatille, mounted 32 guns, and had a complement of 320 men. The Russian frigate came into San Diego disabled, with 68 men killed and 150 wounded. She is a 74, and carried 900 men.* Her name is the Wilhalmooia,
