*£JA SAO A ODDEST.—Yesterday afternoon, Win. Merrimau's little son, about eight yeats old, go- on a wagoa with a penknife open in his hand, and had not vode but a few yards when he fell from the wagon upon the knife, cutting a gash near three inches long, below the ribs on the right side, letting a large portion of the intestines protrude in a frightful manner. The little fellow was quickly taken into Mr. Mahan's Drag Store, and Drs. Ciippenger and Evans were called to dress the wounds The boy was put under the influence of chloroform and all made right again, as perfect as skill and experience can in* struct. 'u
It is thought the intestines were not ijijured.ste ku%

Po»t-0ffioe Robbing, and Elopement of a Married Man. For some" t:m« past suspicion has rested in the minds of the people rer siding in the vicinity of Richmond in this county, that there was something rotten in the management of the PostOffice at that place. Several letters that had been mailed there containing money bad never reached their places of destination, and others that did reach the pei sons to whom they were addressed bore evidence of having being opened and re-sealed. Several weeks since a young man by the name of Smith, in the employ of the Postmaster, and who sometimes had charge of the mails, flourished several $100 bills about the village, and as his wages were not sufficiently high to enable him to support his family and lay by money, he was at onoe suspected of being the
9
thief. nf.iTi.'h A These suspicions soon reached his ears, when he made secret arrangements to leave for "parta unknown."— Telling his wife that he was obliged to be absent for a day or two, lie went over to Pl.'iinfield Township arid induced a young girl, to whom he had been paying his addresses for some time, to run away with him, and the pair left, it is thought, for the West. We understand that Smith wrote back from some point on the Pennsylvania Central Railroad, confessing that he had robbed the mail, and that there was no use in any one following him, as he could never be caught, tt is to be hoped that the scoundrel will be disappointed in his expectation, and that be will be captured and punished as his villiany deserves. The young lady who eloped with him was of respectable family and bore a good reputation.

OLD BREAD.—At the celebration of the Fourth of July, in Dorchester, Mass. two slices of bread, about the color of' sponge and the hardness of bricks were exhibited. The tradition is that the bread was brought from England in 1630.
LOUD TALK.—The Richmond (Va.) Pgtny Pott says: The South has the North in its breeches pocket. It means to have more slave States! It will have them, and the Union will not be dissolved, either.

The Libertine.
If there is a being on earth who de serves the contempt and loathing pity of every honest mind "who polluted the very ground on which he treads—it is that thing (I will not call him a man,) who dead to every dictate of honor and humanity and dead to every solemn obligation which cements society together, regardless of the ties of affection and preservation of moral purity and innocence, will deliberately work the destruction and ruin of female character and blast her prospects for life who will enter the social sanctuary, sit at the social board, make one of the same social circle around the domestic hearth, and for the gratification of his debased and beastly nature arrest the current of social happiness, and in its stead place the flowing tears of anguish, misery, and disgrace. We know not in what rank to station such a monster the midnight fobber appears lovely by his side —the assassin is honorable compared to him—the wild, uututored savage would shrink from his touch. Explore the earth, search its mountains, its cities, leave not a spot upon its surface unexplored, nor a living creature unexamined, and bring forth the most hideous and loathsome specimen in existence, and it would not Call such a traitor companion. Perhaps this is the language of severity well the subject! will bear it. In feet, a more despicable being enters not into the conception of the human mind he should be avoided as the damning excrescence of mortality—a monster whose breath is poison, and whose grasp is death.—Ex.
ESCAPE OF TEN PHISONBBS FROM JAIL.—Ten prisoners escaped from jail in Rochester, N. Y. on the night of the 20th. One.of their number doubtless unlocked the door of his cell and then liberated others. A bar was wrenched from the railing of the gallery and with this the grate in the privy was torn up. The prisoners then descended into the sewer vault, a most filthy passage for a human being to go through. They passed along the sewer and cut a hole through a stone wall into the bathing room—thence climbed the wall sixteen feet high and probably scattered like sheep. «f

HEAV? FALL OF BEEF.—-Last Wednesday afternoon the Eastern span of Shenango bridge, at New Castle, Pennsylvania, fell with a tremendous crash, precipitating about one hundred head ol fine beef cattle into the Iriver, among the ruins of the bridge, Only five or six were killed or drowned the rest, by great exertion, were rescued.
SfW A few days since, a man went to the railroad depot in Holyoke, Massachusetts, just as the cars were star ting, and took the shoes off of an infant's feet as part pay for a debt its mother owed him. Pass him round, he would steal acorns from a blind hog.
