Consistency, tTio proverb assures us, it a jewel. The proverb is generally received correct one. Like most jewels of the first water, however, the one it specifies is but rarely met with. It does not manifest itself on every ocoasio.n In fact, some people are so malicious as to insinuate that it isn't often suffered to "lie about loosely," in the vicinity of the Cincinnati "Commercial."

The following paragraph, for instance, whk»h we cut from an exchange, (the Dayton "Empire" we believe/' seems to intimate something of tfie kind. Alluding to our contemporary.it says:

The paper possesses too much ability^ to waste upon one party long at a time. Like the dews of heaven, or the sunlight, it must diffcse its revivifying influences over every party and principle, by turns. The "Commercial" a wonderful sheet,—wonderful, principally, for its abiutt to turn sumMXBSSTS GBACXTTTtXr.

There is probably some mistake about the above. Wonder if it is not another Know-Nothing libel—a baseless fabri^0^ cation on the part of Samuel to injure the print in question 1 Probably it is for proof vide the following: (From the Commercial, Jaly 18,1865.

In our leading article of Monday, we attempted to show that Mr. Chase, as the candidate for Governor of Ohio stands before the people

We have resolved that it is our duty to our stives, and as conservatives of the interest* o/^fhe Stat% and the people to seek to promote his election.

Between Mr. Medill and Mr. Chase', for the office of Governor of Ohio, we have chosen to prefer the latter. We jf* have done it on a full knowledge of the. character of both, and of the principles, which, as such candidates, they represent, f* (From tie Commercial of July 18,1855.]

And for this purpose there is much cffitness in the selection of Mr. Chase.

Jit, What is there to hinder us from giving our support to Mr. Chase?

Neither, as far as we can discern is there any compromise of principle in giving support to Mr. Chase. [From tle Commercial, March 13,1854.] ^S,iBut it was charged at the time,— and fear, proved-— that the coalition by which Mr. Chsse was elected, was only one element in a wide and extensive bargain with mutual corrupt considerations on all sides. Mr. Chase may have been innocent as he says, or, as Mr. Douglass said, "he didn't steal the money, he just took it, and put it in his pocket but there must have been roguery at the bottom of the transaction.

The bargain included the intrusion of Messrs. Pugh and Pierce into the Legislature the disposal of the publio printing the incumbrances of several important offices, and 60 forth and was TH* commencement of that series of jljerenta whioh have given birth to the

at the motley groop, from this the deck stairs, wlen

our attention was Attracted by the singular action of a tall, brown Yankee, in an immense wool hat, chocolate colored coat and pantaloons, and a fancy vest. He stood near the stasboard paddlebox, and scrutinized sharply every female who cime on board, every now and then consulting an enormous silver bull's eye watch, which he raised from the depthof a capacious fob, bv means of a powerful steel chain. After mounting guard in this manner, he dashed furiously down the gang-plank and up the plank and up the wharf, re-appear-ing on board almost instan'aneously, with a flushed face, expressing the must intense anxiety. This series of operation he performed several times, after which he rushed about the boat, wildly and hopelessly, ejaculated: 'What's the time of day? Wonder if my repeater's fast? Whar's thecap'n? Whar's the steward? Whar's the mate? Whar's the boss that owns the ship?' 'What's the matter, sir?' we ventured to ask him, when he stood for a moment. 'Han't seen nothin' of a gal in a blue sun bonnet, with a white Canton crape shawl, (cost fifteen dollars,) pink gown, and brown boots, hey? come aboard while I was looking for the cap'n at the pint eend of the ship—have ye? hey 'No such person has come aboard.' 'Tormented lightning! she's my wife?' he screamed 'married her yesterday. All her trunks and mine are aboard, under the pile of baggage as tall hs a Connecticut steeple. The darn'd black nigger says he can't band it out, and I won't leave my baggage, any how. My wife—only think on it—was to have come aboard at half-past four, and here it's most 4ive. Whit's become of her? she can't hive eloped. We han't been married long enough for that. You don't think she's been abducted, do ye,mister? Speak! answer? won't ye? 0! I'm ravin' distracted! What are they ringing that bell for! Ia the ship afire?' 'It is the signal for departure—the first bell. The second will be rung in four minutes.' 'Thunder! youdon't say so? Whar's thecap'n?' 'That gentleman in the blue coat.'

The Yankee darted to the captain's side. 'Cap'n, stop the ship for ten minutes won't ye?' 'I can't do it, sir.' 'But ye must, I tell you. I'll pay you for it. How much will ye tax?' 'I can't do it, sir.' 'But ye must, I tell you. I'll pay you for it. How much will ye taxr 'I could not do it.' •Cap'n, I'll give you tew dollars,' gasped the Yankee,

The captain shook his head. 'I'll give ye five dollars and a half— and a half!—and a half!—and a half!' he kept repeating, dancing about in his agony, like a mad jackass on a hot iron pTate. •The boat starts at fire, precisely/ said the captain, shortly, and turned away. .'0, you stunny hearted heathin!' murmured the Yankee, almost bursting into tears.—'Partin* m^n and wife, ai.d we just one day married.'

At this moment the huge paddle wheels began to paw the water, and the walking beam descended heavily, shaking the huge fabric to her center. All who were not going to New Haven went ashore. The hands began to haul in the gang planks the fasts are already cast loose. 'Leggo that plank!' roared the Yankee collaring one of the hands. Drop it, like a hot potatoe, or I'll heave you into the dock.' 'Yo—vo!' shouted the men in chorus, as they heaved on the gangway. 'Shut up, you braying donkeys,' yelled the maddened Yankee, *or there'll be an ugly soot of work/

But the plank was got aboard, and the boat plashed past the pier. In an instant the Yankee pulled off his coat, flung his hat beside it on the deck and rushed wildly to the guard. 'Are you drunk or crazy!' cried a passenger, seizing him. 'I'm goin-' to fling myself into the dock'aiia swim ashore!' pried the Yanr 'kee. 'I muB'nt leave Saisv -Ann alone
