A petititio*. signed by sundry citisens, wss presented, asking that the jarm of the canal, from the basin south, might be drained. The Mayor was directed to request of the Trustees the privilege to place & dam across said arm, near the basin, and drain the same.
It Was ordered that the ordinance regulating the license on billiard tables and bowling saloons be strictly adhered to.

It was ordered that Zenas Smith be Notified to put the cisterns in good or* Jer within ten days, or another person would be employed them at his (Smith's) expetiw, I 'A, resolution directing the St. Commissioner to fix the grade of the streets around the public wells, so as to drain the water from them, was adopted.
A resolution was adopted, directing the Marshal to put in a conductor from die well at the north-east corner of the Public Square to the cistern at the crossing of Wabash and Market Sis., so as to convey the waste water from said well into said cistern.
Sundry accounts were allowed, and Council adjourned.

Arrival of the Cahawba.

The United States Mail Steamer Cahawba arrived this afternoon with dates from Havana to 11th. The political news from the Island of Cuba is unimportant. The disarming of the negro militia was progressing, their services being no longer required.
The sugar mills have ceased grinding, and many thousand boxes are left standing in fields th^, could not be conveyed to sugar-houses onaccountof the rains. The market continues active at advanced prices,
At the last advices, staple products and stock \v«i•« duuiuisl ing. The health of Havana wasunequaled during the past Winter and Spring, mid continues so to the present time. There are refreshing showers every day, and it is confidently expected that 110 epidemic will make its appearance this season.
The U. S. ship Falmouth, Captain Shaw, arrived and anchored in the harbor of Havana, from a cruise on the 10th innt.
The Captain-General had been greatly excited, in censcqueuce of the discovery of a pl.'isier bust of Pinto, wh'ch had been made by Oarbcllo, at the ..instance of some friends of the patriot. Several of the household of the widow had undergone a rigid examination, and a watch was seen upon her house, but no arrest have been made. Everything remained quiet.
FROM WASHINGTON. Washington, July 16. Lieutenant Disnev, of the First Regiment of Artillery, died in this city yesterdav, of typhoid fever. He was stationed at Fort McHenry. He camo here on the 3,1 instant, with a light battery of his Regiment. Ho graduated at West Point last year.
On Saturday last, six hundred land warr Mits were issued. The Union says, the American officers sent to the Ciimea were splendidly and hospitably entertained at Berlin, by the Russian Minister, and at Warsaw by Priuce Paskiewitch.and they had accepted an invitation to visit the Emperor at St. Petersburg.

Yorn, July 16.
By an arrival at this port from Sierra Leone, dates of the 3d June, state that the British expedition against the native chief on Wallaghea river met with a disastrous defeat—50 killed and captured. Among the killed Quartermaster Andrews. Her Majesty's steamer Teaser, and a number of British subjects were also seized by natives on the river Nun.
Her Majesty's ship of war Ferret was dispatched after them.
The diminutive chain of habit is
scarcely heavy enough to be felt until it is too strong to be broken.
