chaste aod clasic invectives upon. We chanced to be'the unfortuuate wight, or rather fortunate perhaps, if his abuse of us results in the same manner as did his abuse of Van Brunt and the Alton road. But we must confess we did not act as wisely as they did, contrary to the promptings of our own judgment— and the advice of those better acquainted with Mr. Sink Sutherland, through a false notion, th«t we were replying to one who, was possessed of enough manly and gentlemanly principles, to preserve his temper, and carry on a little sparing match, without violating all principles of decency, and honesty, we did reply. This called down upen our dtvoted head—the dire iudignation of this puissant "editor." God save the mark! Oh, how his virtuous indignation did rise, to think that we, a poor clock pedler, should bo so presumptuous as to dare to speak of bim, the immortal—the :mmaculate—aye Lhemonied—"Sink" Clair Sutherland—ox-jus-tice of the peace—-ex-speculator in flour —in 8team mills—in "pattent rights" for bedsteads, ah that bedstead operation—was most enough to make him little shyofyankees—guess "Lewis" was most as sharp at fancy trading, as if he had graduated in the same school
"Sink." The perfect puerility of the article devoted to the "clock pedler" and those "assigned notes," was so apparent even to him Bel f—that he grew more rabid apace. His next fancy was to try Van Brunt again and to tell the people that the Ladies of Paris wouldn't ride over the road to a "picnic" with Van Brunt as conductor.— But the Ladies did ride over the road— "Sink Clair" went in a buggy, they say. Then he abused Mr. Sanford--and our fellow citizen Mr. Charles Cruft, cither of whom is so infinitely superior, as also is Mr. Van Brunt—to the editor of the Valley Blade, in every thing that goes to make up the gentleman and the honest man, that no reformatory means short of the direct interposition of Divine Providence, can ever raise him within hailing distance, of them. The citv of Terre Hante too came in for a
